Author Joe Sacco promises that, in the vein of underground comix like ZAP or Weirdo, "Bumf will go where it needs to go, and do what it needs to do." Though Sacco is world-famous for his serious, journalistic books like Palestine, Safe Area Gorazde, and Footnotes in Gaza, Bumf promises to echo back to his earlier days as a satirist and underground cartoonist. Bumf is a project that Sacco has been working on in between larger projects like Footnotes in Gaza, indulging his love of satire and cartooning. Often puerile, disgusting, and beyond redemption, Sacco apologizes in advance, saying he couldn't help himself. "They expect better things from me. They’ll never put me on a stamp now."

"[Sacco’s comics are] a vital pure comix experience." – Time

"Joe Sacco is a genius. Easily one of the most important journalists, writers and cartoonists alive, every stroke of his assured and humblingly mature pen captures what the camera simply cannot. Through his reserved yet compassionate use of words and pictures, he allows us to occupy the horrifying inner and outer boundaries of human cruelty and desperation — yet all, I believe, with the aim of returning to what it means to be a civilized, sympathetic and possibly even forgiving soul." – Chris Ware

"There’s nobody else anywhere near Sacco’s level doing journalistic comics in English." – Douglas Wolk

Bumf Vol. 1: I Buggered the Kaiser by Joe Sacco - Inside Page

President Richard Nixon discovers a plethora of top-secret, otherworldly government facilities, with the primary focus being torture, homeland security, and riding giant wolves while naked except for a hood.

We're basically horrified by the advance copies of Bumf Vol. 1: I Buggered the Kaiser we've received at the Fantagraphics office. There are literal piles of naked, writhing bodies. There is unapologetically crass humor. No one is spared.

It is, in short, a most excellent book, fresh from critically-acclaimed comics journalist Joe Sacco. There is not much else to say. You're just going to have to read and assess this book for yourself.

ROlling stone

Rolling Stone recently listed it's Top 50 Non-Superhero Graphic Novels and we made up 22% of that list (including a few books that we published and have been rereleased by others). If you haven't picked up one of these books, get steppin' to your local comic book store, buy one from the website, visit the library---you've go so many options! Picks by Joe Gross also of the Austin-American Statesman.
Safe Area Gorazde
47 Safe Area Gorazde by Joe Sacco "Joe Sacco is one of the medium's premier journalists; that he has focused on war-torn regions makes his work feel that much more vital and impressive...Gorazde - is a great place to start."
 You'll Never Know
44 You'll Never Know series by C. Tyler "Tyler is a top flight memoirist, and You'll Never Know pulses with a maturity not often found in the medium.
Usagi Yojimbo
43 Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai "Never less than thoughtful and entertaining, Usagi Yojimbo is one of the most consistent comics around."
Dal Tokyo
33 Dal Tokyo by Gary Panter "Pretty much anything the most punk cartoonist ever…
Uncle Scrooge
15 Uncle Scrooge by Carl Barks "His Donald Duck stories are a comedic blast, but his Uncle Scrooge stories are veritable silly symphonies of complicated plotting and intercontinental adventure. Need a master class in how to tell a great comics story? Read any Barks' Scrooge stories from 1950 until his retirement in 1966. It's all there.
Ghost World
9 Ghost World by Daniel Clowes "You're goddamn right it's the Catcher in the Rye of comics."
The Complete Crumb
5 The Complete Crumb by R. Crumb "To ignore him completely is only to invite accidentally ripping him off; he's the Bob Dylan of the comics underground, and his work is embedded in the medium's DNA now."
larn5 Love and Rockets  Love and Rockets 6
1 Love and Rockets by Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez "Imagine the Clash or R.E.M. or Run-DMC not only never broke up, but, for 30 years, never once released a less-than-excellent record. Imagine their command of their craft just became more pronounced year after year, earning the unshakable admiration of their fans and peers. Imagine they made the best record of their career, 30 years on, this decade. This is essentially what Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez have done with Love and Rockets, the greatest American comic book series of all time."

An Appreciation of Palestine
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Joe Sacco 24 Dec 2013 1:16 PM

Every year at this time, as much of the world turns its attention to momentous events in the small West Bank town of Bethlehem two millennia ago, I ritually read Joe Sacco’s Palestine. Sacco’s comic book serial was among the first projects I was asked to promote when I was hired as Fantagraphics marketing and promotions director. At the time, even referring to the occupied territories as Palestine was considered by many to be provocative.

Palestine

While the semantics of the discussion may have changed, the situation in Palestine has remained remarkably unchanged since Sacco visited the region and the first issue appeared two decades ago. In re-reading the Palestine collection each holiday season, I’m reminded how the promise of Peace on Earth remains elusive. And I renew my hope that a lasting peace will finally prevail in that troubled land.

by Daniel Clowes

454-page full-color 7" x 10.625" two-volume hardcover boxed set • $94.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-757-4

Before he rose to fame as the author of the bestselling graphic novels Ghost World, David Boring, Ice Haven, and The Death Ray, Daniel Clowes made his name from 1989 to 1997 by producing 18 issues of the beloved comic book series Eightball, which is still widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential comic book titles of all time. Now, for the 25th Anniversary of Eightball, Fantagraphics is collecting these long out-of-print issues in a slipcased set of two hardcover volumes, reproducing each issue in facsimile form exactly as they were originally published. Included are over 450 pages of vintage Clowes, including such seminal serialized graphic novels/strips/rants as “Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron,” “Ghost World,” “Pussey,” “I Hate You Deeply,” “Sexual Frustration,” “Ugly Girls,” “Why I Hate Christians,” “Message to the People of the Future,” “Paranoid,” “My Suicide,” “Chicago,” “Art School Confidential,” “On Sports,” “Zubrick and Pogeybait,” “Hippypants and Peace-Bear,” “Grip Glutz,” “The Sensual Santa,” “Feldman,” “Glue Destiny,” and so many more, including many never reprinted before now.

What's more, the slipcase will boast BRAND NEW ARTWORK created by Clowes especially for this set (rather than the artwork in our preliminary mockup shown here)!

We still have signed copies as Kickstarter rewards so grab one today!
