"Johnny Craig is probably my all-time favorite cartoonist. I love everything about his work, from the scripts to the storytelling, to the flawless ink lines. The true under-rated genius of EC Comics." – Ed Brubaker (Criminal, Fatale, Incognito, Gotham Central, Scene of the Crime)
"All of these books are essential purchases for comics fans… These are the books that best show off how EC took genre stories seriously, striving to create comics that didn’t treat readers as naive or ignorant." – Noel Murray, Los Angeles Times
"It's fitting that Fantagraphics -- long-time champion of the rights and importance of comics creators, and re-issuer important historical comics -- would arrange a publishing line this way. Even though it may not be surprising, it's still a commendable decision. It's also an important development in further establishing comics as art and literature worthy of serious consideration and study.… It presents work by EC’s most important artists, drawing the work from across all EC titles." – Sam Costello, Full-Stop
Surrounded by the ornate, retro, proto-splatter horror graphics of Jack Davis and Graham Ingels and the slick, futuristic sci-fi stylings of Wally Wood and Al Williamson, EC Comics superstar Johnny Craig stood out in the 1950s with his elegant, crisp, contemporary graphic style. And nowhere did this style work more beautifully than in the dozens of superb crime and horror comics he wrote and drew for EC, mostly for the two comics he also edited, Crime SuspenStories and The Vault of Horror. (Craig was the only EC artist to habitually write his own material for the entire length of EC's run.)
Featuring murderous husbands and wives, executioners, thieving surgeons, vengeful sword-swallowers, time bombs, private dicks, vampires, werewolves, and ghouls, the 23 stories in this book comprise a perfect encapsulation of the very best and darkest kind of noir and horror writing, stunningly executed (in more than one sense of the word) by one of the great cartoonists of his (or any) era. And all in seven or eight pages per story!
Fall Guy For Murder and Other Stories is once again, as are the other EC Comics Library releases, supplemented with several fascinating essays and informative historical notes on the stories.

"Feldstein's art has a delightful amount of expressiveness to it and a remarkable amount of subtle beauty - if a word like beauty can be applied to comics that feature strange blob aliens from outer space." -Jason Sacks, Comics Bulletin
Johnny Craig pulled off some of the most mind-bendingly clever shockers to appear under the EC Comics banner — such as the sexy perfect-crime story "When the Cat's Away...," the supremely ironic "The Execution!," and the impeccably paced slow-burn descent into madness of the Ray Bradbury adaptation "Touch and Go!"
But Craig also applied his eerily crisp and elegantly designed artwork to EC's more outré horror comics, producing many of the finest examples of their trademark Grand Guignol revenge thrillers, including "A Stitch in Time!," "Split Personality!," and "Fed Up!" — as well as a handful of outright supernatural horror yarns such as "Two of a Kind!," "A Bloody Undertaking!," and "The Mausoleum!," featuring some of the most clean-cut (yet still terrifying) vampires, ghosts, ghouls, and zombies ever committed to paper.
Fantagraphics' first volume devoted to Craig's brilliant crime and horror spellbinders (including the fiendish twist-ending title story), Fall Guy for Murder and Other Stories also delivers revealing and insightful historical and critical essays and biographies.
If you're a genuine devotee of comics or noir fiction, it would be a real crime not to steal a look inside!
Our other EC Comics Library volume due out later this month, Fall Guy for Murder and Other Stories, is another auteur turn, featuring Johnny Craig's writing and artwork (for the most part; Al Feldstein scripted a couple). Crime, suspense and horror were Craig's forté, as these 23 delightfully fiendish tales attest, and Craig was responsible for some of EC's most shocking and notorious images.
This is the first of four projected volumes to showcase, for the first time, the full chronological run of Craig's EC stories from Crime SuspenStories, Vault of Horror, and elsewhere, with our trademark bonus features and top-notch production values.
