Move over MAUS, PERSEPOLIS, JIMMY CORRIGAN, PALESTINE, et. al. -- there's a new, epic graphic novel forthcoming in 2009 that is certain to be the toast of the tastemakers. Picture a mash-up of Gary Panter's JIMBO and John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, with a little bit of WWE Wrestling thrown in. It could only come from the pen of one man. No, not John LeCarre! Yes, that's right, can you smell what JOHNNY RYAN is cookin'? Let's just say it's gonna make 300 look like FUN HOME. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing your 2009 National Book Award Winner:
UPDATE: Oh, and that's Book ONE. Of many.
There are gems to be found in this I Can Has Comics interview with Johnny Ryan.
"I've been doing comics for all of these other countries, for all the other Vice magazines. I think it started when there was a Vice France and they asked me to do a comic that totally insulted the French people, so I did a page of gags that were insulting to the French. All of a sudden it started this avalanche of all these other countries being like, 'Oh, do us!' So I had to do one for Italy. I had to do one for Spain. Then I had Germany on the line, and they were like, 'Ah, forget it.' That would've been like the easiest one to hammer out."
Johnny Ryan unearths a rarity from the original self-published run of Angry Youth Comix over on his blog.
We'd like to bring to your attention the first-ever east coast store signings by America's Sweetheart, JOHNNY RYAN. Johnny will be appearing in New York and Boston this June to promote the release of ANGRY YOUTH COMIX #14. In Boston, Johnny will be joined by fellow Fantagraphics author (and, coincidentally, America's other sweetheart) LEAH HAYES, who will be signing copies of her acclaimed new graphic novel, FUNERAL OF THE HEART.
