Show and Tell, Pt. 2
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under Johnny RyanDaniel ClowesartAl Columbia 8 Feb 2008 8:44 AM

More goodness from my Sanctum Santorum...

A gift from Johnny Ryan, patterned after a parody from the back cover of Angry Youth Comix #1:

Two business card drawings I picked up at a con a few years ago for a couple of bucks each. I know nothing about either cartoonist, but I've always wanted to know what a little baby who looks ready to fight has to do with a strip called "Off the Record":

Here's a Dan Clowes drawing of Richie Rich's nemesis that graced a package he sent me many years ago:

And a gorgeous Al Columbia panel that Al gave me years ago:

Gay Utopia Online

I haven't had a chance to really check this out yet, but Noah Berlatsky has, with the help of a few friends, put together this thing called the Gay Utopia symposium. Both Johnny Ryan and Dame Darcy contributed. There's lots of other comics related stuff too; contributions by Ariel Schrag, Michael Manning, Lilli Carré, Edie Fake, Dewayne Slightweight, and Nishizaka Hiromi, as well as essays and more.

The Art of JOHNNY RYAN
At Secret Headquarters
Friday November 30th, 2007

Dozens of new paintings inspired by cult, horror and exploitation films.
If that is not enough for you, there will be popcorn and movie inspired snacks. And if that isn't enough for you MALO-CANTINA will be providing margaritas. An odd mix, I know, but we'll make it work.

Johnny first developed his hilarious drawings in the self-published title Angry Youth Comix. Now published by Fantagraphics Books, Ryan's AYC has become the international bastion of lowbrow humor cartooning. Ryan's utterly unpretentious taboo-tackling is an infectious bombardment of political incorrectness.

Johnny will attend the opening from 7pm to 10pm. Secret Headquarters will feature Ryan's one-of-a kind original works of art through January 7th, 2008.

Located in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, California Secret Headquarters offers a sophisticated take on the traditional comic book store. Specializing in comic book culture, Secret Headquarters features the best in graphic novels, trade paperbacks and monthly titles.

I hear Edward Norton doesn't even know he owns one of these fine products.

For my dad's recent 60th birthday I thought I was being very thoughtful when I sent him a mousepad featuring a picture of his first car-- a damaged picture that I had reconstructed for him in Photoshop. When I called him he laughed since even he hasn't used a mousepad in years.

BUT that's all the more reason to get your highly collectible Jordan Crane mousepad before everyone realizes that it's the last mousepad that will ever be made. PLUS you help out Jenny Ryan's Felt Club.

Or, at the same site, you can buy a pretty mirror with art by Johnny Ryan.

Or whatever.
