Josh Simmons returns with his first full-length graphic novel since 2007's acclaimed House. A group of women, one man, and two dogs are making their way through a post-apocalyptic world in search of a city that supposedly still has electricity and some sort of civilization. Along the way, they go to a comedy club, take a drug called Gumdrop, and encounter gangs of men who are fools, lunatics, or murderous sadists. In other words, all manner of terrors.

Josh Simmons is one of the field's most distinctive voices in the genre of horror (The Furry Trap, House),and this full-length graphic novel is his best work yet, echoing director John Carpenter's perfect tick-tock pacing, as well as Shirley Jackson's ability to transcend genre and turn it into literature.

 Black River full final
Josh Simmons' latest, greatest and most terrifying graphic novel yet is about to hit the United States and he is taking Black River to the road. Black River stars a group of women, one man, and two dogs are making their way through a post-apocalyptic world in search of a city that supposedly still has electricity and some sort of civilization. Along the way, they go to a comedy club, take a drug called Gumdrop, and encounter gangs of men who are fools, lunatics, or murderous sadists. In other words, all manner of terrors.  You think the Hunger Games is scary? What if it was your every damn day? This full-length graphic novel is his best work yet, echoing director John Carpenter's perfect tick-tock pacing, as well as Shirley Jackson's ability to transcend genre and turn it into literature.

Check out Simmons 'round the United States tour (plus two Canadian stops) and mark your calendars. Some events feature some guest cartoonists, some music by Sunshine Ear's Gregory Spencer and some special venues will be screening Simmons' chilling short films.

Black River by Josh Simmons - Inside Page

Our printer copies of Black River have arrived, and the sun just disappeared behind a large, grey cloud.

Coincidence?

Josh Simmons' newest long form work since his 2007 acclaimed graphic novel House is a post-apocalyptic tale that, at its core, embodies despair and the most basic, primal graspings of survival. Don't go looking for a happy ending here.

Black River hits bookstores this May. Fans of Simmons, horror, and post-apocalyptic stories, pre-order this book here.

Black River by Josh Simmons - Excerpt
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under previewsJosh SimmonsComing Attractions 25 Feb 2015 4:50 PM

A bedraggled group of travelers finds an abandoned storehouse full of rations, fresh water, alcohol, and supplies. They celebrate, even as one of them uncovers a dead body in a dark corner.

Anyone who has read Josh Simmons' previous work can already guess that such celebration will be short-lived. In his latest full-length graphic novel, Black River, Simmons takes us to a post-apocalyptic world of desperation, survival of the most brutal, and chaos in the form of gangs, a drug called Gumdrop, and resource scarcity. In the midst of this, a group of nine travelers and their two dogs do their best to survive, hoping against hope to find safe haven.

Read our 9-page, downloadable PDF excerpt here, then go pre-order your copy for a May delivery! And make sure to keep tabs on our Flog and social media for more previews and author appearances.

Black River by Josh Simmons - Cover

Master of horror Josh Simmons is back with an all-new graphic novel filled with terrors to chill the mind and soul. In Black River, the world is a barren, post-apocalyptic landscape where no one is to be trusted and chaos reigns. A ragtag group of people travel together for safety, looking out for each other as they seek a supposed walled city that still has electricity and some semblance of civilization left.

We're pleased to present the finalized cover design here for you. Black River is scheduled to be released in April and is available for pre-order now!

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, in association with Short Run Comix and Arts Festival, is pleased to present Marathon II, the second annual Short Run art show featuring Tom NeelyEd Piskor, Josh Porcellino, MariNaomiJosh Simmons, and Pam Wishbow. The exhibition and book signing on Friday, November 14 serves as a reception for participants and fans of the lively Short Run comix convention held the following day at Washington Hall in Seattle's Central District.

 Hospital_JohnP  Henry_and_Glenn_small

The exhibition title references the daunting challenge of establishing a viable career in alternative comix. Marathon II showcases a diverse group of gifted artists that defied the odds. John Porcellino is one of the pioneers of the minicomics movement. His primitive King-Cat Comics, which debuted in 1989, document his determination to change perceptions of contemporary cartooning.  Porcellino will present his new graphic novel, The Hospital Suite. Tom Neely similarly struggled to fashion a livable income in self-publishing. His fortunes turned when he began producing Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever, which follows the fictional romance of rock personalities Henry Rollins and Glenn Danzig. This modest minicomic series became a pop culture sensation, and has since been collected into a full-length graphic novel featuring Neely and other independent cartoonists, including fellow Los Angles artist MariNaomi, who will present her new collection Dragon's Breath at the event.

Pittsburg's Ed Piskor collaborated with seminal self-publisher Harvey Pekar on American Splendor and other projects. He current series, Hip Hop Family Tree from Fantagraphics Books, follows early practitioners of the inner city idiom through their rise to international notoriety. Seattle-based artist Josh Simmons also self-published comix prior to his association with Fantagraphics Books. Pam Wishbow represents an emerging artist at the outset of her career.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet exhibiting artists and other participants in the Short Run Comix and Arts Festival on Friday, November 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
