Black Light: The World of L.B. Cole - Cover

During the Golden Age of Comics, Leonard "Len" Brandt Cole earned fame for his proto-psychedelic comic book covers. We've collected Cole's work from throughout his prolific career in Black Light: The World of L.B. Cole—a lush, oversized full color art book that includes an exclusive biography by Bill Schelly and proofs of never-before-seen unpublished covers.

Our final cover art for this wondrous book highlights Cole's style, described by the editor as "a brilliant spectacle of primary colors sizzling against intense black backgrounds." The book is slated for a December release and is available for pre-order now!

Spring-Summer 2014, part 19: Black Light, Film Noir
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Mark FertigLB ColeKickstarterComing AttractionsBill Schelly 3 Dec 2013 6:26 PM

Our campaign to support our Spring-Summer 2014 season on Kickstarter is ongoing, and we're continuing to spotlight the books in question, a couple at a time. We've also put our season catalog online for you to browse. (Please note that all artwork, contents, prices, specs, and release dates are preliminary and subject to change.)

Black Light prelim cover

Black Light: The World of L.B. Cole
by L.B. Cole; introduction by Bill Schelly

272-page full-color 9.25" x 13.25" flexibound softcover • $39.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-762-8

L.B. Cole created some of the most bizarre, proto-psychedelic, eye-popping comic book covers of all time, yet remarkably this is the first retrospective of his career, featuring the largest collection of Cole covers ever assembled, in an oversize format that showcases his attention to detail and his versatility in all the popular comic book genres of the day. Cole burst into comics during the glory years of the Golden Age of comics. He was famous for his bold covers, usually featuring "poster colors" — brilliant primaries often over black backgrounds — and an over-the-top sense of the bizarre mixed with whimsy. There's never been a comic book cover designer like L.B. Cole and there's never been a book like this one.

Film Noir 101 prelim cover

Film Noir 101: The 101 Best Film Noir Posters from the 1940s-1950s
by Mark Fertig

120-page full-color 10.75" x 14.25" hardcover • $29.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-759-8

Collecting 101 noir movie posters of, arguably, the greatest noir films ever made in the genre (including classics The Maltese Falcon, Laura, and Double Indemnity). Reproduced in a stunningly designed, oversized format that shows off the spectacular visual elan of Hollywood movie posters at their best, the book is not only a stunning showcase of film noir art, but also establishes the crucial films and identifies their key characteristics, with critical commentary on each film by editor and scholar Mark Fertig. This is an ideal handbook for noir rookies, a valuable resource for old-hats, and a visual feast for fans of film noir and American entertainment art.

For a Kickstarter pledge of $40 or more, pre-order this book signed by author Mark Fertig while supplies last! Or, for a pledge of $75 or more, get one of two film noir poster prints: The Blue Dahlia or Murder, My Sweet! (Or increase your pledge to the sum of all the rewards you want and tell us your choices!)
