Tom K.'s "Million Year Boom"
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under Tom KaczynskiMomeKilloffer 25 Jan 2008 12:46 PM

One of my favorite newer cartoonists is Tom Kaczynski, a regular contributor to MOME. His 14-page story in the forthcoming Vol. 11, "Million Year Boom," just might be his best story yet. Here's a couple of lovely panels. Can't read 'em? Sorry, you'll have to buy the issue!

By the way, have I mentioned who's on the cover of Vol. 11 yet? He also has a fantastic 12-page story in the issue, as well.

Jonathan Bennett, Inkstud

Inkstuds has a new interview with one of my favorite cartoonists (and graphic designers), Jonathan Bennett. Jonathan says at the end that he thinks it went terrible, but he's wrong, I enjoyed it.

Mome 10

MOME Winter/Spring 2008 (Vol. 10)
By various artists; edited by Gary Groth & Eric Reynolds

Critically acclaimed for its compilation of dynamic young cartoonists, this volume of Mome showcases the vibrant newbies and a few of the more established artistes. Mome Vol. 10 features the 20 page conclusion to the Jim Woodring graphic novella, "The Lute String." This story, previously published only in Japan, features Woodring's signature characters — Frank, Pupshaw, and Pushpaw — in a universe-bending saga that finds the trio in a very unexpected world of flying, shrieking demons and bulbous-faced monsters. Also featuring the work of Tom Kaczynski (and an interview with him with Gary Groth), Robert Goodin, Dash Shaw, Ray Fenwick, John Hankiewicz, Sophie Crumb, Tim Hensley, and Jonathan Bennett, plus a surprise Mome debut from Jeremy Eaton. The reclusive Al Columbia emerges once again, this time providing the cover.

Must Read: Mome 10, Dash Shaw
Written by Jacob Covey | Filed under MomeDash Shaw 7 Jan 2008 11:58 AM

This weekend I sat down with our latest Mome anthology (#10 with Al Columbia covers) and I highly recommend that every fan of the comics medium buy it if only for the brilliant piece by Dash Shaw. For me Dash came out of nowhere and now he's just burning up with unconventional story-telling and smart formal experiments. One of the more remarkable things about his work is that in general (but very specifically in Mome 10) Dash is succinctly using color the same way other cartoonists use images in addition to words-- as a means to tell more than the written word alone could convey.

Unfortunately I don't have time for a proper review of his work. Suffice it to say that I don't get excited about many comics and his Mome piece is a poetic sci-fi mindbender when Vonnegut is about as sci-fi as I usually read. His blog and Bodyworld strip are online now.

Tom Kaczynski interviewed
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under Tom KaczynskiMome 7 Dec 2007 12:23 PM

I have a feeling I forgot until now to link to this interview with MOME great Tom Kaczynski. If I'm wrong about that, read it again. It's that good.

Blog Flume
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under Mome 5 Dec 2007 11:56 AM
Tim Hensley, Jonathan Bennett, Todd Hignite, Alvin Buenaventura and Ken Parille have started a blog, and it's bound to become one of my very favorite cartooning-related blogs around. Two of my favorite cartoonists (Bennett & Hensley), my favorite comics mag editor (Hignite), one of my favorite comics critics (Parille), and one of my favorite publishers (Buenaventura). That's one heavy-hitting lineup. Add to your RSS feed, already.
