Tally ho, adventure lovers, another volume of Hal Foster's masterpiece is coming your way in a couple of months, as heralded by the appearance of advance copies of Prince Valiant Vol. 8: 1951-1952 in our hallowed halls. A theological thread runs through this volume with storylines about the coming of Christianity to Val's Nordic homeland (see Val getting a lesson on the Norse pantheon with a pre-Lee/Kirby Thor on the cover) along with all the usual derring-do, epic battles, domestic comedy, and dramatic life changes. Pre-order now for your express ticket to comics Valhalla!

Our campaign to support our Spring-Summer 2014 season on Kickstarter is ongoing, and we're continuing to spotlight the books in question, a couple at a time. We've also put our season catalog online for you to browse. (Please note that all artwork, contents, prices, specs, and release dates are preliminary and subject to change.)

Prince Valiant Vol. 9 prelim cover

Prince Valiant Vol. 9: 1953-1954
by Hal Foster

112-page full-color 10.25" x 14" hardcover • $34.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-735-2

In our ninth volume, Arn tries his hand at being a warrior, Merlin is bewitched by Nimue, and Tillicum and Boltar have a son named Hatha — the first inter-racial baby "born" in comics. Most of the second half of this volume follows Gawain and Val’s pilgrimage to the holy city of Jerusalem and Queen Aleta's return to the Misty Isles, where treacherous nobles seek her throne... and her death. Also featuring a look at Prince Valiant's 1954 escapades on both the large and small screens by Foster scholar Brian M. Kane. As with all the previous volumes in this highly acclaimed series, these pages are reproduced for the first time from Foster's personal set of color engraver's proofs, the most impeccably produced Prince Valiant series ever produced.

For a Kickstarter pledge of $50 or more, pre-order this volume signed by Brian M. Kane while supplies last!

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Vol. 5 prelim cover

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Vol. 5: Outwits the Phantom Blot
by Floyd Gottfredson

288-page black & white/color 10.5" x 8.75" hardcover • $29.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-736-9

Disney’s greatest villain steals the spotlight! The vile Phantom Blot — dressed head-to-foot in his ghostly black cloak — is turning Mouseton upside down and leaving a trail of danger and destruction behind! Can Mickey thwart his plans? Our latest book also finds Mickey battling "Mighty Whalehunter" Pegleg Pete on the high seas and meeting a powerful genie! Lovingly restored from Disney's original proof sheets, this volume also includes more than 30 pages of extras! You'll enjoy rare behind-the-scenes art, vintage publicity material, and fascinating commentary by a most-wanted list of Disney scholars. Walt Disney often said that his studio's success "all started with a Mouse" — now it’s time to rediscover the wild, unforgettable personality behind the icon: Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse. Edited by Disney historian David Gerstein and Gary Groth.

For a Kickstarter pledge of $40 or more, pre-order this volume while supplies last and support our season!

Shortly after his baby son Arn is christened, Prince Valiant, along with Sir Gawain, is sent to investigate reports of black magic in wales, where the two find themselves in a pitched battle at Castle Illwynde. After a brief stint home to enjoy his young son, Val and his crew travel to Rome on a quest for teachers who could bring Christianity to Thule. The story climaxes in an escape through the Alps!

“Foster’s meticulously detailed, painstakingly researched, vividly realistic, and often breathtaking illustration made him one of the most revered artists in the comic field.” – Library Journal

"Anyone with a love for fantasy art can only marvel at [Foster's] ability to capture both the gritty down-to-earth feeling of the times as well as those sweeping moments that kindle our sense of wonder.... These books are wonderful — rich and comprehensive..." – Charles de Lint, Fantasy & Science Fiction

“A witch named Horrit once prophesied that Val would never know contentment, but fans of the strip will find it here.” – Vanity Fair

Prince Valiant opens up a world that I wanted to stay in — a wide-eyed early 20th century approach to fantasy with a now-vanished sincerity and wholesomeness. It’s an all too rare pleasure in comics.” – Dan Nadel, Comics Comics

“Medieval swordplay and adventure have never been as glorious as in Foster’s Sunday-only comic strip.... Prince Valiant is one of the best-drawn comics ever, and this new edition does ample justice to its achievement.” – Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"Fantagraphics' Prince Valiant reprints are handsome packages, indeed. ...Hal Foster's art virtually leaps off the page, alive with detail and vigor." – John Petty, Comics Buyer's Guide

You might think that birth of Prince Valiant's son Arn at the end of the previous volume would have slowed down Val's adventuring, but you would be wrong. After the baby has been christened, Valiant and Gawain are dispatched to investigate reports of black magic in Wales, ending up in pitched battle at the aptly-named Castle Illwynde. Then it's off to Scotland to battle the Picts, and then home yet again for Val to visit his growing boy.

Valiant now enters the 1950s: The Thule winter is hard and bleak, and a prince who has designs on Aleta must be dealt with. Then it's another epic-length story, "The Missionaries," in which Val and several of his fellow knights and crew travel to Rome on a quest for teachers who might bring Christianity to Thule. The story also features an escape through the Alps, far too many red-headed girls, and a tragic, life-changing event for the young squire Geoffrey (a.k.a. "Arf"). And Foster charmingly ends the book with "The Prince Arn Story," a three-week sequence narrated by the toddler.

Prince Valiant Volume 7, once again shot from stunningly crisp and colorful original printer's proofs from Foster's original collection, also features the usual wealth of supplements, including another brace of rarely-seen Foster art, and an introduction by the recently-anointed artist of the ongoing Prince Valiant strip, Thomas Yeates.
