Megahex by Simon Hanselmann - Excerpt

Meet Megg, Mogg, and Owl. Megg is a drug-addicted, depressed witch, and Mogg is her familiar — a cat who doesn't seem to respect her boundaries. Owl is an anthropomorphized owl. This first collection of Tasmanian-born Simon Hanselmann's online comic stars characters struggling with poverty, drug use, depression, sexuality, and their sometimes abusive relationships with each other. Megahex will feature three seasons of Megg and Mogg from the past five years, as well as over 70 pages of new material.

Our downloadable excerpt dives right into Megg, Mogg, and Owl getting high and getting in trouble. There is a party where Werewolf Jones shows off a party trick that results in an ambulance ride to the ER. Afterwards, the remaining party-goers have a "Horrible Feet Contest", which Werewolf Jones returns just in time to win.

Megahex will be out in August, but you can reserve your copy now!

Megahex by Simon Hanselmann

Look what showed up on Tumblr yesterday (and in our inboxes): Simon Hanselmann's final cover art for Megahex, his eagerly-awaited collection of Megg, Mogg, & Owl comics! We're not sure yet exactly where this will land in our schedule, but its convention debut will definitely be at SPX in September, and it is available for pre-order. For now we'll just let the artwork speak for itself... gee, it looks like Simon has publisher pride, huh? We love you too, Simon!

Arsene Schrauwen prelim cover

Arsene Schrauwen
by Olivier Schrauwen

250-page full-color 8" x 10" hardcover • $34.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-730-7

In 1947, the author's grandfather, Arsene, traveled across the ocean to a mysterious, dangerous jungle colony at the behest of his cousin. Together they would build something deemed impossible: a utopia of modernity, in the wilderness — but not before Arsene falls in love with his cousin's wife, Marieke. Whether delirious from love or a fever-inducing jungle virus, Arsene's loosening grip on reality is mirrored by the reader's uncertainty of what is imagined or real by Arsene. This first full-length graphic novel from the critically-acclaimed Olivier Schrauwen is an engrossing, sometimes funny, slightly surreal and often beautiful narrative.

For a Kickstarter pledge of $50 or more, pre-order this book signed by Olivier Schrauwen while supplies last! Or, for a pledge of $40 or more, get an exclusive Risograph print by Ollie! (Or increase your pledge for one or the other to $90 and get both!)

Megahex prelim cover

Megahex
by Simon Hanselmann

200-page full-color 6" x 8.75" hardcover • $29.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-743-7

Megg is a depressed, drug-addicted witch. Mogg is her black cat. Their friend, Owl, is an anthropomorphized owl. They hang out a lot with Werewolf Jones. This may sound like a pure stoner comedy, but it transcends the genre: these characters struggle unsuccessfully to come to grips with their depression, drug use, sexuality, poverty, lack of work, lack of ambition, and their complex feelings about each other in ways that have made Megg and Mogg sensations on Hanselmann's Girl Mountain Tumblr. This is the first collection of Hanselmann's work, freed from its cumbersome Internet prison, and sure to be one of the most talked about graphic novels of 2014, featuring all of the "classic" Megg and Mogg episodes from the past five years as well as over 70 pages of all-new material.

For a Kickstarter pledge of $40 or more, pre-order this book signed by Simon Hanselmann while supplies last! Or, for a pledge of $40 or more, get an exclusive t-shirt with art by Simon (image TK)! Or, for a pledge of $75 or more, get Simon's mix tape! Or, be the lucky individual who gets an all-new original painting of anything you want (almost) by Simon for a $750 pledge! (Or, increase your pledge to the sum of two or more items for total Hanselmannia!)

Simon Sale
Oh shit, guys. Simon Hanselmann is having a sale on original art, comic covers and his infamous Truth Zone comics. Simon states, "I am currently offering (scamming people with) the originals of truth zone episodes 1-69. they are $120 in Australian dollars..." Not to be the bearer of bad news but since his Tumblr posts went up, pages are starting to go so don't think you can just go out and have a pint first and expect that page you want to still be there (you know, the one of the Crittys, where Simon drew you and bagged on Nick Gazin at the same time).

Hanselmann's book with Fantagraphics, MEGAHEX, was announced at SDCC and is coming out summer of 2014. So jump on these pages while the getting is rather inexpensive and then you can nod at the original art every day you walk by it, chuckling to yourself AND your good fortune for reading the Flog on a Friday. Damn, you're a smart person. More on Hanselmann's Tumblr, Girl Mountain. Get a page and then get a pint.

Megg, Mogg & Owl

San Diego, CA 7/20/2013 — Fantagraphics is excited to announce the acquisition of the first book by acclaimed Australian cartoonist Simon Hanselmann, to be released in the summer of 2014. Megahex will be a deluxe hardcover featuring over 200 pages of Hanselmann's beloved Megg, Mogg, and Owl comics, including over 70 never before seen pages. Hanselmann's Tumblr site Girl Mountain has already propelled Megg, Mogg, Owl & Co. to Internet infamy, and Megahex will be the solid collection those fans have long been waiting for.

Megg (a green-skinned witch), Mogg (a black cat), and Owl (an anthropomorphic owl) are a trio of ne'er-do-well roommates cohabiting in a suburban flophouse. Megg and Mogg spend most of their time smoking pot and having sex, while Owl works various office jobs and usually comes home to find himself as the butt of every joke. Behind the crass poop jokes and stoner humor are the depressed and misanthropic lives of these characters. They all possess tragedies that weigh on their shoulders, keeping them from escaping the nihilistic pit into which they've fallen. Equally funny and melancholic, Hanselmann is able to evoke empathy for his characters, making it easy for readers to fall in love with this disdainful bunch. Part Tennessee Williams, part Peter Bagge, Megahex will make people laugh, cry, and then take a shower.

"This is literally a teenage dream," explains Hanselmann, "Fantagraphics has been my favorite / the best comics publisher since forever. I've had a Fantagraphics poster hanging over my bed since I was fourteen. My brain is doing confused celebratory cartwheels."

"Simon has the deadly combination of talent and work ethic," says Fantagraphics Associate Publisher Eric Reynolds. "He has a sneaky awareness of the language of comics and a pitch perfect sense of dialogue and humor. He is almost too good to be true. The first Megg & Mogg strips I read were so effortlessly funny and fully realized that I almost couldn't believe he wasn't a pseudonym for someone more established."

Megahex is set to release in June 2014 from Fantagraphics Books, Inc.
