Things to See: Tim Lane Folktales page
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Tim LaneThings to see 7 Sep 2011 1:09 AM

Meat - Tim Lane

Tim Lane teases his forthcoming short story collection in-progress, Folktales, with this eye-popping splash page. The story will also run in an upcoming issue of Strapazin. This is one of those times when I regret that we discontinued Mome.

Things to See: Re-Covered, Re-Paneled, Rebooted
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Things to seeSteven WeissmanStephen DeStefanoNoah Van SciverMalachi WardLove and RocketsJim Rugg 6 Sep 2011 5:39 PM

Some recent action on the themed-fan-art blogs. A couple of new ones have cropped up, one just for fun and one for a very good cause:

The Little Monsters - Noah Van Sciver

Noah Van Sciver takes a pretty great turn at the Covered blog — between that and this Archie Noah drew I'm starting to think he might be pretty well suited to draw kids' comics

Steven Weissman at Repaneled

• On the Repaneled blog, Steven Weissman does the Teen Titans

Plastic Man - Jon Morris & Stephen DeStefano

• Jon Morris penciled and noted Plastic Man aficionado Stephen DeStefano inked this cover for the new "DC reboot covers we'd like to see" blog DC Fifty-TOO!

http://www.fantagraphics.com/images/flog/mike/201109/jimrugg_gen13.jpg

• Also for DC Fifty-TOO!, Jim Rugg does GEN13

http://www.fantagraphics.com/images/flog/mike/201109/caloveandrockets-crop.jpg

• As part of their jokey "Indie Comics Reboot" series, Comics Alliance presents Love and Rockets reimagined by artist Kevin Mellon as though it "went through the mainstream reboot machine"

The Divine Invasion - Malachi Ward

The Divine Invasion is organized and curated by Floating World's Jason Leivian and features artwork (and other items) being auctioned to benefit Sparkplug's Dylan Williams, much of it with the theme of Philip K. Dick book covers. Above, Malachi Ward's version of the book which gives the project its title

Ubik - Jim Rugg

• Another by Jim Rugg, and another for The Divine Invasion: Rugg's version of Philip K. Dick's Ubik

Things to See: Jason's Athos in America sketch teases

http://www.fantagraphics.com/images/flog/mike/201109/so_long.jpg

At his Cats Without Dogs blog, Jason is posting rough sketches and brief notes on each of the stories in his upcoming book Athos in America. Above, "So Long, Mary Ann," followed by "The Brain That Wouldn't Virginia Woolf," with more to come. There's something else great on his blog that we're saving for later. (You've seen it already if you follow our Tumblr.)

Things to See: SPX 2011 program cover by Jim Rugg

SPX 2011 program cover by Jim Rugg

Via our colleagues at AdHouse, it's the cover illustration for the 2011 SPX program guide by newly-minted Mome contributor Jim Rugg... and what's that making a cameo appearance? It's Tim Hensley's Wally Gropius being read by the girl in the foreground, who, if she's to scale with the book, is about 9 feet tall (without the boots).

Athos in America - back cover - Jason

Jason shares his artwork for the back cover of his upcoming story collection Athos in America and it makes a fine counterpoint to the front cover.

Athos in America - cover illustration - Jason

Jason has revealed the beautiful cover illustration for his next forthcoming book, Athos in America. At his blog he includes the initial thumbnail sketch, which I recall falling in love with when he first posted it a little while back. Title treatment and coloring are TK. The book will be in the same clothbound hardcover format as Low Moon.

Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Usagi YojimboThings to seeStan Sakaisales specialsPrince Valiantfan artBrian Kane 22 Aug 2011 3:55 PM

Usagi Yojimbo/Prince Valiant fan art by Brian Kane

Prince Valiant chronicler (and fine cartoonist in his own right) Brian Kane presented Usagi Yojimbo creator Stan Sakai with this fantastic fan-art mashup of Val and Usagi at the Baltimore Comic Con this past weekend and forwarded it along to us, and now he's given us permission to share it with you! (Click the image for a slightly larger version.)

Inspired by this artwork, we had the idea to offer free standard domestic shipping on orders that include at least one Usagi book and at least one Prince Valiant book for the rest of the week! This offer is not available for online orders, so call 1-800-657-1100 to take advantage. (Offer applies only to in-stock Usagi and Valiant books and expires at 5PM Pacific time on Friday August 26, 2011.)
