DKW: Ditko Kirby Wood by Sergio Ponchione — Coming this July!
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Wallace WoodSteve DitkoSergio PonchioneJack KirbyComing Attractions 16 Apr 2014 3:51 PM

DKW by Sergio Ponchione

Shortly after completing the serialization of Sergio Ponchione's surreal masterpiece Grotesque, we came across portions of his project DKW: Ditko Kirby Wood on his blog, and we immediately knew we had to bring this phenomenal work to American readers. A loving tribute to Steve, Jack, and Wally, DKW tells their stories with astounding, eye-popping, trippy visuals that transport you inside the imaginations of these three master comics-makers.

We're pleased to present DKW as a one-shot comic book coming to comic shops this July! Look for it in the May issue of Previews, out in two weeks, and demand it from your local retailer.

witzend - Cover Uncovered

witzend

At last we can reveal the slipcase artwork for our two-volume complete collection of witzend, coming this Summer. Occupying the fertile but seldom-trod ground between the undergrounds and the "overground" mainstream (sometimes called "groundlevel comics"), witzend was created in 1966 by Wallace Wood and ran for 13 issues over nearly two decades, providing a forum for unfettered expression by creators used to toiling under commercial restrictions — in other words, a place for Wood and his friends to let their freak flags fly. And oh, what a list of friends he had. We'll get into that later... in the meantime, see how many of them you can identify in this dazzling design! (Presale is pending — there's a Gordian Knot we're still untangling.)

"The women when not naked are about to get naked, or may be pining for a time when they will be naked…A lot of the work is sublimely handsome, as is befitting a Wally Wood comic, and has the authority that a well-drawn work brings that we tend not to question but is such a remarkable gift to tone and feel." –Tom Spurgeon, Comics Reporter

"Serialized in Overseas Weekly, far away from applicable content restrictions, Cannon reconfigures the tradition of adventuresome comics patriotism into something more to Woody's liking, with an emotionless killing machine doing what needs to be done, every time, no matter how naked the ladies get." -Joe McCulloch, The Comics Journal

The Cold War heats up in an explosion of sex and violence! John Cannon, programmed to be the perfect assassin and working as a covert operative, is an all-American hero who makes James Bond look like a milquetoast. Undercover and under the covers, Cannon endures nude torture by beautiful women, explosive gunplay, naked catfights, bone-crunching plastic surgery, Hitler, nihilistic lovemaking, nuclear bombs, Weasel the spy, naked women, death from above, and more naked women! You can practically smell the gunpowder and testosterone as Cannon smashes the enemies of America and makes the world safe for democracy!

Comics legend Wallace Wood pulled out all the stops in these strips, produced as entertainment for our men in uniform. This volume also includes Cannon's two-fisted comic book adventures, penciled by the one and only Steve Ditko! Remastered from newly unearthed sources and including an introduction by Howard Chaykin, it's the biggest, baddest, best-looking collection of Cannon ever!
