Digital comics: comiXology presents two new graphic novels
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Wilfred SantiagoDylan Horrocksdigital comicscomiXology 19 Feb 2015 2:48 PM
Michael Jordan ipad
This week from comiXology you can now enjoy the finest graphic novels: Michael Jordan: Bull on Parade by Wilfred Santiago (21). A thrilling, kinetic bio-epic about Michael "Air" Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time and most influential athlete in history, from the creator of the acclaimed and best-selling 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente. This tour de force explores Jordan's public successes and private struggles, with the depth of Santiago's passion for his subject shining through on every full-color page. Feel the sweat as you swipe for only $18.99!

"From a scuffle with Patrick Ewing in the book's opening pages to the titanic feat of multiple NBA Championships, this book breaths with potent comic book electricity, phrasing court pivots and jump-shots with the same bombast as celestial superhero brawls." –Sean Edgar, Paste Magazine
Sam Zabel
In addition, you can also read Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen by Dylan Horrocks (Hicksville). Cartoonist Sam Zabel hasn't drawn a comic in years. Stuck in a nightmare of creative block and despair, Sam spends his days writing superhero stories for a large American comics publisher and staring at a blank piece of paper, unable to draw a single line. Then one day he finds a mysterious old comic book set on Mars and is suddenly thrown headlong into a wild, fantastic journey through centuries of comics, stories, and imaginary worlds. Accompanied by a young webcomic creator named Alice and an enigmatic schoolgirl with rocket boots and a bag full of comics, Sam goes in search of the Magic Pen, encountering sex-crazed aliens, medieval monks, pirates, pixies and - of course - cartoonists. Funny, erotic, and thoughtful, Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen explores the pleasures, dangers, and moral consequences of fantasy. This fantasy can be yours for the touch of a digital button

"This is a complicated, rich story about confronting the sometimes-lurid or nakedly obvious wish-fulfillment aspects of comic books, but it's also about the ways Sam's distress with the world can't be satisfied by other people's ideas of paradise." –Tasha Robinson, NPR

NY Times Best Seller: Michael Jordan
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Wilfred Santiagoawards 16 Feb 2015 10:47 AM
Michael Jordan
Wilfred Santiago's most recent dance in the comics world is on the basketball court with Michael Jordan: Bull on Parade. His kinetic and gorgeously painted graphic novel is sitting pretty for the second week in a row on the NY Times Best Seller's list. "This biography focuses on the public and private life of the superstar basketball player during his professional career…" Michael Jordan: BOP focuses on, as Santiago puts it, a fascinating figure who was never too interested in satisfying people, other than his own personal drive. Grab a copy before they are all gone!

Here's what some recent reviewers and critics have said about this heart-pounding, sneaker-thumping story:

"From a scuffle with Patrick Ewing in the book's opening pages to the titanic feat of multiple NBA Championships, this book breaths with potent comic book electricity, phrasing court pivots and jump-shots with the same bombast as celestial superhero brawls." - Sean Edgar, Paste Magazine

"Players lurch across the court, striding over a mundane landscape that Santiago transforms into a mythopoetic stage. It's grandiose, theatric...Wilfred Santiago does a fantastic job of getting me to buy into a subject I have no real interest in. The level of craft at play-in the writing, art, coloring-is exceptional, and BULL ON PARADE is a work totally befitting its colossal subject." -Shea Hennum, This Is Infamous
The New York Times
Tuned into Michael Jordan
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Wilfred Santiago 7 Feb 2015 3:29 PM

Michael Jordan
Cartoonist Wilfred Santiago's newest graphic novel, Michael Jordan: Bull on Parade is currently sweeping the nation off it's feet and slamming them back down mid-court sweating through their pump-able Air Jordans.

On Santiago's own site, Good Wilfred, he's collected some of the better lyrics from songs, from 2 Pac to Jurassic 5, that include Michael Jordan and references to his full-court domination.

MJ

Here's what some of the premiere critics have had to say about the man, the myth and the legend as documented by Santiago's pen and brushes.

"…this book breaths with potent comic book electricity, phrasing court pivots and jump-shots with the same bombast as celestial superhero brawls." –Sean Edgar, PASTE Magazine

"What's brilliant about Wilfred Santiago's Michael Jordan: Bulls On Parade is how it works to reconcile the two sides of the person the public believed he was and the person he might actually be. It's an empathetic and exciting whirlwind of a story that spans across decades of tragedy and triumph to come out the other side with a portrait that could only end with a certain level of complex ambiguity." –Patrick Hess, Nothing But Comics

"Wilfred Santiago was a protégé of Ho Che Anderson (remember him?) and as such is a proponent of the sort of honest, experimental and energetic kind of storytelling that can only come from life on the fringes of both real life and the comics world." –Bart Croonenborghs, Broken Frontier

Jordan became a national celebrity at the age of 19, scoring the winning jump shot in the final seconds of the 1982 NCAA Championship, earning him the moniker "Air." He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1984, a team with a decade-long history of dreadful performances. By 1991, Jordan disproved doubters when he finally led the Bulls to their first NBA championship over Magic Johnson and the L.A. Lakers.

In 1992, Michael Jordan joined the Dream Team, an assembly of 12 legendary NBA players who steamrolled everyone at the Barcelona Olympics and brought the gold back home. Despite taking a season off to try his hand at professional baseball, Jordan still led the Bulls to three consecutive NBA Championships twice.

Despite his success, his life in the limelight and his private life were not without controversies or calamities, and no amount of success or money could shield him from it. But everyone wanted to be like Mike, and Santiago comes closer than anyone to putting you on the parquet floor of the Chicago's United Center in your very own pair of Air Jordans.

Praise for 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente:

"…Wilfred Santiago captures the physical grace of baseball and creates a story of visceral and emotional force… Santiago… has produced a rich and surprising work. The compositions and framing are intricate and varied… Santiago captures Clemente’s relentless vitality as a player, frames the story around the historical and religious traditions of Puerto Rico, and handles Clemente’s tragic death with restraint, all with a gimlet eye and the sensitivity of a true artist. It is a classic story given new life in this fresh, innovative telling." – Alex Belth, Sports Illustrated

"…21's eloquence is visual, and it is a very real eloquence. The character of Roberto Clemente is nearly hugged to death in this particular portrayal: he’s virtuous and charming and earnest and respectful to elders… But the world around him is alive, and Santiago's expressive (and occasionally, bracingly expressionistic) approach to portraying Clemente’s wild athletic genius ensures that it remains thrillingly present… [A] fitting and vital tribute." – David Roth, Los Angeles Review of Books

Wilfred Santiago
CAKE 2015 in Chicago is already rolling out the announcements of special guests and we are very excited to tell ya that Wilfred Santiago will be storming the court with his new graphic novel about the local legend, Michael Jordan: Bull on Parade. This is Santiago's latest graphic novel since his homerun hit (oh yes, we know you love those sports references), 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente.

CAKE's announcement gives a nice summary of Santiago's career as well: His first professional work was seen in the DC Comics/Milestone Media series Static, and since then he has gone on to create the original graphic novel In My Darkest Hour and the best-selling comics biography 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente, and he has had illustrations published in Sports Illustrated, The Chicago Tribune, and elsewhere. He publishes Goodwilfred Sunday Magazine every first Sunday of the month with his wife. For more information, CAKE and Fantagraphics suggest reading this interview at The Comics Journal, or this interview at Comics Alliance. GAME ON.
