Two Fantagraphics' cartoonists have been give the green light to make a full season of animated cartoons for Nickelodeon. Dave Cooper and Johnny Ryan are in the full she-bang, a full 26 episodes of PIGGOATBANANACRICKET and we are oh-so excited!

Cooper told the Ottawa Citizen, "This is pretty big. I'm pretty excited about it. My life is going to be very different from now on."

And Johnny Ryan stated, "The plan is to create a cartoon that is hilarious and incredibly weird. I want it to be something that kids not only talk about at school the next day but something that they're still talking about in the old age home when they become senior citizens." Enjoy this preview!

Wake Up, Percy Gloom Percy Gloom

Cartoonist of Percy Gloom and Wake Up, Percy Gloom, Cathy Malkasian is one busy woman. After working on such animations like Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys film (for which she received a British Academy Award nomination), and most recently, creating 20 episodes of Curious George for PBS since 2008, she still has time to make a new graphic novel AND create her own small series. Hiding in Happytown is available to watch on YouTube and is the "adult animatic series featuring the travails of a tortoise in a city full of rabbits." Excitable, nervous and depressed, Scampers the tortoise is one of us, the person who isn't swept up in a musical moment every damn minute of the day and knows that darkness creeps around every corner.

With titles like "Froth and Debt" or "Sex Education," the series will be sure to impress you. Watch the rest of Malkasian's Hiding in Happytown on YouTube and preorder Wake Up, Percy Gloom today!

Wandering Son is 10 years old!
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Wandering SontelevisionShimura Takakoanimation 13 Nov 2012 12:18 PM

Comic Beam Wandering Son

Serialized since December 2002 in Comic Beam Magazine, Shimura Takako's beautiful take on adolescence and growing up Wandering Son is celebrating its 10th year in Japan. With complex characters who discover they enjoy identifying as a different gender than their own, the story slowly evolves as Nitori and Takatsuki gain confidence. A quiet story that resonates deep with anyone who has felt different or been teased for seeming not manly or girly enough. Matt Thorn and Fantagraphics first made Wandering Son accessible in English in 2011 but we're speeding up the process! Volume 4 comes out at the beginning of the new year, followed by Volume 5 in June. Six will shortly follow, hopefully in time for the holidays.

Wandering Son anime

The Wandering Son anime is available to watch for free at Anime News Network if you want a taste of the graphic novels. The beautiful watercolor-style of Takako is reflected in the treatment of the anime. Young middle-school students often openly describe what they want to learn throughout the school year, offer ways to help each other become the person they want to be in a refreshingly ernest way. The graphic novels are a to-die-for with pristine design and gorgeous Takako full-color character introductions. Sign up for a subscrption of Volumes 4-6 or check out your local library today! And eat a delicious cupcake to celebrate Wandering Son!

Ron tells us "I did drawings for a second one too, that will be coming out! Dave Cooper & Johnny Ryan present: PigGoatBananaMantis!
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under videotelevisionJohnny RyanDave Cooperanimation 15 Aug 2012 4:01 PM

Word's been buzzing around for a while that Dave Cooper & Johnny Ryan were developing an animated show for kids together and once we picked the pieces of our heads up off the floor we've all been eager to see the results. Well here it is, and now we have pieces of head all over the place again. PigGoatBananaMantis! was written by Johnny, art-directed by Dave, and animated by Nick Cross. (See the full list of credits on the YouTube page.) What do they call this, a pitch reel? Demo? I dunno, but whatever cable network executive passed on this is an IDIOT.
