Critically-acclaimed author Junot Díaz has finally revealed the deluxe edition to his book This Is How You Lose Her and you're just gonna love who added some rockin' illustrations! From his site:
"A must-have collector's edition of Junot Díaz's bestseller and National Book Award finalist, a stunningly designed and illustrated slipcase edition of This Is How You Lose Her, which was a New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the 2013 National Book Award. Jaime Hernandez-deemed 'one of the twentieth century's most significant comic creators' for the 'Love and Rockets' series he co-created and other work-has produced full-page, original illustrations for this edition, one for each story, that perfectly capture the love-haunted spirit of the book and the string of gorgeous, smart, gutsy women whom irresistible, irrepressible Yunior loves and loses."
It's been awhile since I've been a bookseller but I'd definitely have some fun with the displays since Stephen Dixon's His Wife Leaves Him is coming out the same season....
Noah Van Sciver is selling original art! What's this all about, you ask? We here at the Fantagraphics 24-hour news network know how much you love Noah and have been questioning us via various and dark channels fo without further ado, we're sending you over to NOAH himself to hear more:
"Thank, Jen, so 'what's this original art from' scream children and adults alike? Why it's from THE HYPO: The Melancholic Young Lincolnfeaturing a young pre-presidential Abraham Lincoln on a date, traveling through the wilds of Illinois on horseback and the wilds of a banquet hall. These pages won't weigh you down but they will have you searching your soul for meaning. $100 a pop and feel free to email me about other pages. Back to you, Jen!"
Thanks, Noah, and for those of you who enjoy making EYE CONTACT with the people you buy things from, Noah will be at both Autoptic in Minneapolis THIS SUNDAY and at SPX in September. Wait, what? I'm also hearing something about selling comics, Blammo, hugs? Noah, my earpiece is malfunctioning, I'll just have them check out your website.
Oh shit, guys. Simon Hanselmann is having a sale on original art, comic covers and his infamous Truth Zone comics. Simon states, "I am currently offering (scamming people with) the originals of truth zone episodes 1-69. they are $120 in Australian dollars..." Not to be the bearer of bad news but since his Tumblr posts went up, pages are starting to go so don't think you can just go out and have a pint first and expect that page you want to still be there (you know, the one of the Crittys, where Simon drew you and bagged on Nick Gazin at the same time).
Hanselmann's book with Fantagraphics, MEGAHEX, was announced at SDCC and is coming out summer of 2014. So jump on these pages while the getting is rather inexpensive and then you can nod at the original art every day you walk by it, chuckling to yourself AND your good fortune for reading the Flog on a Friday. Damn, you're a smart person. More on Hanselmann's Tumblr, Girl Mountain. Get a page and then get a pint.
You may recall, our own Jim Woodring has teamed up with local beer experts Elysian Brewing Company for a new line of flavors dubbed the Oddland Series! Here's how the collaboration works: Elysian comes up with a kooky flavor, runs it past Jim who sketches an idea; the recipe is tweaked, ingredients secured, and we're off to Oddland!
For the second flavor in the series, the brewers at Elysian present the Oddland Spiced Pear Ale, brewed with pears, Northwest premium 2-row and German Cara-hell malts, bittered with German Northern Brewer and finished with Yakima Cascade and Czech Saaz hops. Cumin and cardamom give it a heady and exotic touch, offsetting a drinkable and refreshing beer of 6.25% alcohol by volume.
Jim's label is also exotic and heady: a buxom songstress sitting on a rock, accompanying herself on a banjo, surrounded by blue alligators and many eyeballs. I'm drunk just looking at it!
Available in stores and on draft beginning July 15th, and at the Oregon Brewers Festival July 24-28 on the Willamette waterfront in Portland.
When Al Columbia is not drawing chilling comics or making home-made flame throwers (they can shoot as far as fifteen feet!), he's with his band cooking up something cool. The music video "Black Bikini" was filmed on location at 'Plum Island.' Columbia has about eight songs ready for his new album called Journey to Death Island, which will be out from Psychopop Records in the near distant future. Give it a listen, maybe even a shimmy and shake.
Janet Hamlin, the only court artist from 2006 until earlier this year at the Guantanmo Bay trials, reported last week that the stadium glasses she's been using to draw the courtroom trials have been...banned.
The only thing that could make Al Columbia's Pim and Francie even more terrifying is to add color. Columbia recently sent Hi Fructose some exclusive new paintings they are featuring on their website that continue the horrorscape he created in 2009's Pim and Francie. Turn the lights down low, grab that gristle pie you made for lunch and enjoy these haunting illustations after the jump.
Maakies and Sock Monkey cartonist, Tony Millionaire, continues to be funnier than you on paper, in person and on film. This weekend Funny or Die released the video The Edge of Alligiance featuring Millionaire as George Washington on Mount Rushmore. If this made you spit out your cuppa joe, check out the older Fun With Godwhere Millionaire plays who else but God? Keep your eyes peeled for our San Diego announcements so you know when Tony Millionaire will be signing books at our booth!
