The Society of Illustrators in NYC presents R. Crumb: Lines Drawn On Paper, running March 23 - April 30, 2011, with an opening reception on Friday March 25 at 7:00 PM. This retrospective of Crumb's work, curated by Monte Beauchamp, founder/editor of BLAB! and editor of The Life and Times of R. Crumb (St. Martin's Press), presents key pieces culled from the underground art collection of Eric Sack, with contributions from Paul Morris and John Lautemann. Needless to say: a must-see! This fascinating-looking exhibit which originated at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco last summer is now traveling to Toronto. From the announcement:

Graphic Details is a groundbreaking touring exhibition, providing the first in-depth look at a unique and prolific niche of graphic storytelling — Jewish women's autobiographical comics. While the influential role of Jews in cartooning has long been acknowledged, the role of Jewish women in shaping the medium is largely unexplored. This exhibition of original drawings, full comic books and graphic novels, presents the powerful work of eighteen Canadian and international artists whose intimate, confessional work has influenced the world of comics over the last four decades, creating an entirely new genre.

Featuring work from artists: Vanessa Davis, Bernice Eisenstein, Sarah Glidden, Miriam Katin, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Miss Lasko-Gross, Sarah Lazarovic, Miriam Libicki, Sarah Lightman, Diane Noomin, Corinne Pearlman, Trina Robbins, Racheli Rotner, Sharon Rudahl, Laurie Sandell, Ariel Schrag, Lauren Weinstein, Ilana Zeffren

Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women
Originated by Michael Kaminer and Sarah Lightman
February 17th to April 17th, 2011
Opening Reception Thursday February 17th, 7:30PM-10PM (Artists in attendance)
@ Koffler Gallery Off-Site at the Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St W

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery presents LOVESICK Comix Exhibition Opening February 12
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Fantagraphics Bookstoreeventsart shows 9 Feb 2011 10:43 AM

Lovesick

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery loves local comix! This Saturday features the festive opening of "Lovesick," an exhibition of emerging and established artists from the Bureau of Drawers cartoonist collective. The show includes original art, handmade books and prints by over 16 Seattle comix artists and illustrators who will be present on February 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM — just in time for Valentine's. Acoustical serenades by Bureau of Drawers members Dennis Driscoll and Sean Robinson, DJ Russ Fallout spinning lovely platters, and complimentary beverages promise to make this a memorable evening. Bring your sweetie — or find one in the romantic Georgetown arts district.

The Bureau of Drawers formed in 2010 as an alliance of independent alternative cartoonists. They've participated in high profile events at the Seattle Art Museum, Bumbershoot, and Urban Light Studios. Artists include David Lasky, Tom Dougherty, Scott Faulkner, Nikki Burch, Marc Palm, Breanne Boland, Billis Helg, Tyler Hill, Calamity Jon Morris, Sean Robinson, Mark Stockbridge, Ed Trumbule, Adam Watson, Dalton Webb, Stevie VanBronkhorst and Sophie Yanow. Expect an eclectic mix of topical works on the loose theme of unrequited love.

This event coincides with the 3rd anniversary edition of the colorful Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack featuring adventurous - and amorous - visual and performing arts events throughout the historic neighborhood. For more information and a participant map visit: www.georgetownartattack.com. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale St. (at Airport Way S.) just minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Ray Fenwick's Mascots exhibit opens in Toronto Thurs. Feb. 10
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Ray Fenwickeventsart shows 7 Feb 2011 2:05 PM

http://www.fantagraphics.com/images/flog/mike/201102/ray_fenwick_whatd_i_miss_4_.jpg

From the official announcement:

Mascots presents an edited version of the collected paintings from Ray Fenwick's recently published book. The works, not unlike a group of short stories, are a collection of vignettes and staccato bursts of narrative that combine to form a surreal-and vaguely familiar-parallel world. Like Fenwick's previous work, the paintings are driven by language and typography, occupying a space where visual art, comics, prose and poetry bleed into one another.

Ray Fenwick is an artist living and working in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He has shown in Canada and the U.S. and is the author of two books. His previous book, Hall of Best Knowledge , earned a nomination for "Best Avant-Garde Graphic Novel" from The Canadian Cartooning Awards. For the month of March he will attend a residency at Struts Gallery, where he will be working on new audio pieces and text paintings.
