The song is "Jackie's Blues" (the lyrics of which are in The Lonesome Go) performed & recorded by a variety of musicians to include in the box set. This is open to anybody who wants to contribute a version. Here's a recent recording by Tom Jessen. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, in association with Short Run Comix and Arts Festival, is pleased to present Marathon II, the second annual Short Run art show featuring Tom NeelyEd Piskor, Josh Porcellino, MariNaomiJosh Simmons, and Pam Wishbow. The exhibition and book signing on Friday, November 14 serves as a reception for participants and fans of the lively Short Run comix convention held the following day at Washington Hall in Seattle's Central District.

The exhibition title references the daunting challenge of establishing a viable career in alternative comix. Marathon II showcases a diverse group of gifted artists that defied the odds. John Porcellino is one of the pioneers of the minicomics movement. His primitive King-Cat Comics, which debuted in 1989, document his determination to change perceptions of contemporary cartooning.  Porcellino will present his new graphic novel, The Hospital Suite. Tom Neely similarly struggled to fashion a livable income in self-publishing. His fortunes turned when he began producing Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever, which follows the fictional romance of rock personalities Henry Rollins and Glenn Danzig. This modest minicomic series became a pop culture sensation, and has since been collected into a full-length graphic novel featuring Neely and other independent cartoonists, including fellow Los Angles artist MariNaomi, who will present her new collection Dragon's Breath at the event.

Pittsburg's Ed Piskor collaborated with seminal self-publisher Harvey Pekar on American Splendor and other projects. He current series, Hip Hop Family Tree from Fantagraphics Books, follows early practitioners of the inner city idiom through their rise to international notoriety. Seattle-based artist Josh Simmons also self-published comix prior to his association with Fantagraphics Books. Pam Wishbow represents an emerging artist at the outset of her career.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet exhibiting artists and other participants in the Short Run Comix and Arts Festival on Friday, November 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the heart of Seattle's historic Georgetown arts community. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

AUSTIN: Tim Lane at Texas Book Festival
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Tim Laneeventsart shows 22 Oct 2014 10:30 AM
Lonesome go Poster
This weekend is THE Texas Book Festival in the heart of the state, Austin, on the grounds of the State Capital. Tim Lane of The Lonesome Go and Abandoned Cars will also be in attendence and holding court. Lane is known for his dense cartooning of American legends and dusty Route 66 tales. Stark washes of white and black pools of ink draw readers to the page while the mystery and mayhem leave them fraught with distress at each page turn. Here's were you can find Lane during the festival:
Litcrawl
Saturday, October 25th
Foxing Quarterly and Fantagraphics LitCrawl with Tim Lane - 9:30 PM
The Volstead Lounge at Hotel Vegas. Just like with Lane's signing at The Phoenix, he'll be doing recordings of Jackie's Blues so if you are an earnest musician of any instrument come out to jam or do a solo recording for his project.

Sunday, October 26th
On Comics Panel- 11:15 AM - 12:00 PM
Beautiful, and at times haunting, pen-and-ink illustrations clash with the Great American Mythological Drama in Tim Lane's new collection, The Lonesome Go. Moderated by Danithan Mejia.
Location: Capitol Extension Room E2.028

Immediately after Lane's panel you'll find him at the book signing tent signing The Lonesome Go. So please enjoy this free festival on the grounds of the capital and enjoy all the delicious food Austin has to offer whether it's the ever-present Torchy's Tacos, Aster's Ethiopian, or that beautiful white bean chili at the Texas Chili Parlor (mere steps from the Texas Book Festival.

New South Convention in Austin Needs Help
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under art shows 17 Oct 2014 2:10 PM
New South
The beautiful and well-printed Foxing Quarterly is attempting to host a new convention in Austin, Texas, an area nearly bursting to the seems with comic and illustrative talent, called NEW SOUTH. They have a Kickstarter set up with some amazing awards like a Jim Rugg Tote Bag (if you don't like Street Angel, you obviously have no soul). And they need your help to meet the goal in the next day. From Danithan's mouth, "Two years ago I co-founded Foxing Quarterly, a literary & arts magazine based here in Austin, Texas. My goal with Foxing was to spotlight literature and comics within our city and beyond. We've done this through readings, art shows, concerts, book swaps, and even a small-scale literary festival." See below:
Foxing Quarterly
Danithan Mejia is one of the most earnest souls in comics, trying to make something from nothing, whether it is their FQ publication, stickers featuring Steven Weissman and Sam Alden or gorgeous jaw-dropping prints by Eleanor Davis. FQ is hosting a LitCrawl along with the Texas Book Festival next weekend featuring our own Tim Lane, celebrating his new book, The Lonesome Go. FQ is also somewhat tied to local community pillar store Book People, another sign that New South and Foxing Quarterly will not be disappearing anytime soon. See Ben Sears made a great illustration for a shirt.
FQ shirt
Austin has another show called Staple that expanded from one to two days many years ago (I haven't been since 2008 when I spent most of the time talking to a cartoonist who let me know they made more money as an anthropomorphic porn illustrator....) but the spirit behind NEW SOUTH is fervent and would showcase a lot of new talent, despite leaning on well-known Rugg and Box Brown for design. They also want to keep the festival free to the public so more goes to the artists, cartoonists and writers (who also are paying cheaper table fees). So please read their own pitch on the Kickstarter page and help be a part of the New South
