Ted Stearn, the cartooning mastermind behind Fuzz & Pluck 2 has won his own prize at Angouleme! On Saturday night this album published in French by Cornélius, brought home the award for best series. This second volume follows the bizarre further adventures of an irritable plucked rooster and an awkward but lovable bear take them on separate paths to the gladiatorial ring and a Quixotic task, with an unlikely climactic convergence. Grab a copy of the international award winning book today (from us if you want to read it in English)!
"This epic tale of a hapless li'l bear and his defeathered friend is why I love comics. All hail the peculiar Fuzz & Pluck and their creator, Ted Stearn!" -Matt Groening
We're very pleased to have had three books chosen by the American Library Association's GLBT Round Table for their two honors lists this year. 7 Miles a Second by David Wojnarowicz, James Romberger, and Marguerite Van Cook and Julio's Day by Gilbert Hernandez were both named to the 2014 Over the Rainbow List of recommended books for adult readers in the Graphic Narrative category, and Wandering Son Vol. 4 by Shimura Takako was chosen for the 2014 Rainbow List of recommended reading for younger readers under Graphic Novels. (This is the third year in a row on the list for the Wandering Son series.)
As reported by the Oregonian, the 2014 Oregon Book Award short lists have been announced. Oil and Water, a graphic novel about the cleanup of Deepwater Horizon oil spill, by Steve Duin and Shannon Wheeler is up for the Pacific Northwest College of Art Graphic Literature Award.
Duin and Wheeler are in line with Barry Deutsch ("Hereville: How Mirka Met a Meteorite"), Natalie Nourigat of Portland ("Between Gears"), Joe Sacco of Portland ("Journalism") and Craig Thompson of Portland ("Habibi"). Good luck to all but mostly Duin and Wheeler!
For those wanting to attend the Oregon Book Awards ceremony is March 17 at the Gerding Theater at the Armory hosted by Luis Urrea. Grab a copy today and see what all the fuss is about.
Congratulations to Lilli Carré for being awarded the third annual Columbus Museum of Art and Thurber House residency! Carré follows two years of Fantagraphics cartoonists as a winner (Ed Piskor and Paul Hornschemeier) to Ohio. Carré will be staying at the historic home of author and New Yorker cartoonist, James Thurber (and throwing RAD parties - joke!).
While in town, she'll have a number of events the public and students may attend:
At Thurber House: Young Writers' Studio Tuesday, March 18, 6:00-8:00 pm - Led by Lilli Carré. Visit thurberhouse.org for more information
At CMA: 2014 Graphic Novelist Residency Exhibition On view March 14 - June 8 - This exhibition showcases the variety of Lilli Carré's creative practice and includes art works in several media.
Art Lab visiting artist Wednesday, March 19 - Lilli Carré will meet with the high school interns enrolled in CMA's Art Lab program.
Artist's Talk and Interview Sunday, March 30, 2:00 pm - Lilli Carré speaks about her creative process with interviewer, comics writer, and blogger Jared Gardner, a professor of English and Film Studies at OSU. Free with museum admission.
Her last book with Fantagraphics, a collection called Heads or Tails was a nominee for many awards like the 2013 Eisner nomination for best Graphic Album - Reprint, 2013 Ignatz for Outsanding Artist, Outstanding Anthology and Outstanding Story plus a 2013 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize Honor Book. Enticed and intrigued? There's at least two more copies left (on earth) at the Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle.
Following a line of Fantagraphics' cartoonists like last year's Joe Sacco and 2011's Daniel Clowes, the great Gilbert Hernandez has won the Pen Graphic Literature Award for outstanding body of work. Judged by panels of distinguished writers, critics, and editors, Hernandez's 30 years of work in comics includes FIVE books out this year! It's nothing to sneeze at. The 23rd Annual Literary Awards Festival takes place at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA on Monday, October 14th, 2013.
On Saturday night, Ulli Lust won the Ignatz Award for Best Graphic Novel for her large work Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life. Translated by Kim Thompson, the story is set back in 1984, where a rebellious, 17-year-old, punked-out Ulli Lust sets out for a wild hitchhiking trip across Italy.
Charming and well, just plain bad-ass Lust sold out of her graphic novel earlier in the day. Thank you for your support and coming to say hi to our favorite Austrian cartoonist! Get your own copy of her book today!
Today SPX, Small Press Expo, released the nominees for the Ignatz Awards given out the Saturday of the show, September 14th. We have quite a few cartoonists listed and are so excited for them. Their amazing work speaks for itself but a nice brick award (based the Krazay Kat and Ignatz) is always helpful makes you look tough as hell next to your drawing table. Attendees of SPX are given ballots so start walking NOW to Bethesda and you'll get there in time.
Congrats are in order to Simon Hanselmann for Outstanding Comic nomination for St. Owl's Bay. His book MEGAHEX is coming out from Fantagraphics in 2014 so get ready for more amazing comis.
Here's a quick link to all of our Ignatz-nominee books in case you need to load up for some good readin'. See all of you at the awards acting all dignified and then sorta sloppy at the chocolate fountain!
