Heppy New Year!
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under Beastsawards 2 Jan 2008 7:11 AM
Happy new year, faithful floggers. I begin the new year with yet another "Best Of" list. You've no doubt had enough of them, these "Top Tens" and "Must Have" lists and checklists from hither and yon. I promise to not inundate you with the vast majority of such digital miscellany, but to our fellow cartoon publishers, I have but one question for you: How many of your books made the list of The Top Cryptozoology Books of 2007? Yeah, that's right, I'm talkin' to you. What's that? I can't hear you. Huh? Yeah, that's what I thought. You can shut up now.
Top 5s and 10s
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under PeanutsPaul Hornschemeierawards 10 Dec 2007 1:31 PM

More year-end accolades: New York Magazine has named Paul Hornschemeier's The Three Paradoxes one of its five Best Comics of 2007. Paul is the only American creator on the list (Japan, Israel and Australia are also represented), so hey, I guess that unofficially makes The Three Paradoxes the best American comic of the year! Congratulations, Paul!

Meanwhile, The Complete Peanuts 1963-64 makes it onto Time's Top 10 Graphic Novels of 2007 list. I don't know if the writer is the first to compare Snoopy's doghouse to the TARDIS, but if so, nicely done. We're honored to continue collecting Schulz's work.

Your list of Official Selections at the 2008 Festival International de la Bande Desinée d'Angoulême includes:

Peter Bagge's En Route Pour Le New Jersey, the French edition of Buddy Does Jersey...

...and Linda Medley's Château l'Attente, known here in l'Amerique as Castle Waiting.

Félicitations à tous les artistes.

Bardín the Unstoppable Awards Machine
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Maxawards 20 Nov 2007 12:32 PM
Via The Beat: Spanish artist Max has been awarded the first-ever Premio Nacional del Cómic 2007 (National Comics Award) by the Spanish Ministry of Culture for his book Bardín the Superrealist. This is the second major European comics award received by Bardín, and this one comes with a nice fat €15,000 prize. According to the Spanish Reuters article (as translated by Babelfish), "'the jury considers' Bardín the Superrealist 'a graphically overwhelming work, with an original script and filled with literary, philosophical and cinematographic references,' the ministry in an official notice said." Congratulations, Max!
