EAFA, also known as the Evergreen Association of Fine Arts, and formerly known as Eastside Association of Fine Arts, is throwing down big names for their first discussion panel of 2015. Joining them onstage will be champion local favorites, Jim WoodringMegan Kelso, and Eroyn Franklin. Inner City Romance at Fantagraphics Bookstore on Valentine's Day
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Guy ColwellFantagraphics Bookstoreeventsart shows 27 Jan 2015 2:28 PM

Guy Colwell's comic book serial Inner City Romance appeared in 1972, illustrating the unvarnished reality of an emerging urban counterculture. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to commemorate the new anthology of this provocative work with an exhibition of original drawings, paintings, and prints opening Saturday, February 14 (on Valentine's Day, appropriately enough.)

 Inner_City_Romance

Oakland native Colwell distinguished himself from the dominant themes of the period's underground comix movement by rendering in explicit detail the crime, poverty, death and desperation of his inner city protagonists. His approach is at once alluring and grotesque. As Matt Gonzalez observes in Juxtapoz magazine, "Colwell's art is motivated by two primary sentiments: first, a deep political strain meant to expose and offer commentary on political, economic, and racial disparities that exist in our society, and second, an awareness of man's uncomfortable relationship with nature and sexuality." His comix, drawings, and paintings examine similar themes.

SAW Indiegogo Fundraiser - The Final Hours
Written by Anna Pederson | Filed under eventsEd Piskor 23 Jan 2015 2:07 PM

The Indiegogo event for this year's Sequential Arts Workshop has technically mets its goal, but that doesn't mean you still can't give part of your Friday pay to a cutting edge educator.  SAW's goal is not only to product well informed and highly skilled artists, but to bust the doors wide open on the high prices of an advanced degree. And you can help make their school possible with a tax-deductible donation to this non-profit!

Instruction, mentorship, and hand-on production experiences help create the next generation of working cartoonists build a community based on blending the importance of tradition and innovation. The '14-'15 year is well under way, but a little extra is needed to offset next year's costs of facilities, educators, and workshops. Speaking of workshops, this March SAW will be hosting a workshop with Aidan Koch from March 2-6, and cool kid, Ed Piskor from March 9-13Registration for these events can be found on SAW's website.

If you can't make it to Florida for either workshop, you can still feel like you were there by hitting up this Indiegogo event and selecting the Workshop Roundup reward! Other premiums include things like a Ron Rege poster, or a Julie Doucet print.

A culturally and artistically important group like SAW is deserving of our well-wishes and some well-earned bucks. I just filed my taxes, so I know I'm looking for a way to give!

Linework 2015
You heard right! The Daniel Clowes will be appearing at Linework NW on April 19th, 2015 in Portland, OR as one of their special guests and signing his fantastic new collection, The Complete Eightball, at the Fantagraphics' table.
Complete Eightball
From the mouths of Linework NW: "Daniel Clowes is one of the great voices of contemporary American literature and a legendary artist and draftsman. His newest publication is The Complete Eightball 1-18 (Fantagraphics Books), a mammoth two-volume, 568-page collection of the author's groundbreaking personal comics anthology, a work that consistently raised the bar of comics art and literature over its impressive 17-year run. It was in these pages that many of Clowes' graphic novels were first serialized, including Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, David Boring, and Ghost World, which was adapted to film by Terry Zwigoff in 2001 with an Academy Award nominated screenplay by Clowes. Linework NW is extraordinarily honored to be hosting the official world premiere of The Complete Eightball 1-18 at our festival."

Thursday, January 22nd

San Francisco, CA - This blog post may as well be called 'This Thursday in Fanta Events' because your 4th favorite day of the week is stacked with events to tide you over until the weekend comes. Kick it off in San Francisco with the men of Zap Comix as we continue to celebrate the release of The Complete Zap Comix Collection, a physical and emotional undertaking that is beautiful to behold. Join Gary Groth and Ron Turner of Last Gasp as they moderate a dicussion with Zap cartoonists Paul Mavrides, Victor Moscoso, and Robert Williams at City Lights Booksellers beginning at 7 pm. This very-nearly sold out book will be available for purchase and signage at City Lights (just don't try to carry it home in your NPR tote bag.) (More Details)

New York, NY - Humans can be split into two ages; a time where we communicated with pictures, and a time where we communicated with words. The blending of these worlds comes in the form of visual poetry, a fully immersive brain exercise in the conveyance of emotions, ideas, and beauty. The Future is Here Again is an exhibit opening today at AC Institute in NYC, and it will feature dozens of works by noted visual poetry artists whose works had been previously collected in the books Coldfront and The Last Vispo. Niko Vasilakis, editor of The Last Vispo has currated this new exhibit with ACI director, Holly Crawford. To continue this night of magnetic mashups, the alternative chamber music string trio, Speed Bump will be providing mingling music. Festivities begin at 6 pm! (More Details

Washington, D.C. - Obama did a pretty good job delivering his State of the Union address this past week, but he had one glaring oversight, he forgot to talk about how the Massive team will be at Fantom Comics this Thursday from 7-9 pm! The biggest and sexiest gay manga anthology is coming to our nation's capitol to announce their new policy on having a good time, and dropping some knowledge about the men who make gay erotic manga. Addressing their adoring constituents are editors Anne Ishii, Graham Kolbeins, and designer extrodinare Chip Kidd. Pick up one of the hottest books of the season tonight, because it'll be on next years comic citizenship tests. (More Details)

LA: Les McCann and Pat Thomas at Book Soup

Book Soup
Portraits shot at the right moment are like the fermata on a pitch perfect note. Master photographer and jazz pianist Les McCann was able to catch such moments from the greatest of jazz singers and musicians. YOU now have a chance to meet him! Author and historian Pat Thomas (Listen Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975) curated the new McCann retrospective: Invitation to Openness: The Jazz & Soul Photography of Les McCann 1960-1980 and will be with McCann at the book release party at Book Soup on Saturday, March 28th. 5pm is when DJ Adam Dorn starts spinning the soulful tunes to images by McCann. Pat Thomas will host a roundtable with McCann and A. Scott Galloway, music journalist and introduction writer.

The new book featuring his photographs comes out at the same time as rerelease of Les McCann's Invitation to Openness album from Omnivore Records. The Invitation To Openness album (originally from Atlantic Records) has "remained a landmark statement in free-form improvisation mixed with soulful grooves, featuring a 26-minute continuous track with expressive instrumentation from the likes of Yusef Lateef, Ralph McDonald, Cornell Dupree, Bernard Purdie, and Alphonse Mouzon." These beautiful photographs still resonate to this day, an un-diminished harmony of beautiful black and white.

Invitation to Openness is coming soon from Fantagraphics, a refrain you'll read and hear often until, it's March release striking a chord within the hearts of photography fans and lovers of jazz. Be one of the first to enjoy a signed edition by picking up your copy from Book Soup on March 27th.

SF: Guy Colwell at Pegasus Bookstore
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Guy ColwelleventsBob Levin 16 Jan 2015 2:52 PM

Inner CIty Romance
This collection has been a long-time coming! On Friday, February 27th cartoonist, painter and activist Guy Colwell will be at Pegasus Bookstore in San Francisco for the release of Inner City Romance. This blood-pumpin', needle-stickin' collection features comics on social politics like racial activism, harassment, prison, black culture, ghetto life, the and the sex trade. It portrays the unpleasant realities of life in the inner city, where opportunities were limited and being on the lowest end of the economic ladder meant that one's vision of the American dream was more about survival than lifestyle choices.

Colwell will be in conversation with author Bob Levin about his journey from cartoonist/painter to radical activist who utilized his craft to pass along a message. The talk starts at 7pm with a book signing to follow.
