Saturday, September 6th

Though the official gallery opening for one of the funniest cartoonists of the last 40 years is on the 30th of August, you wont want to miss the evening reception with M.K. Brown herself, as she gives guided tours through her own exhibition at San Francisco's Cartoon Art Museum. This once in a lifetime reception runs from 4-6 pm, and is completely FREE and open to the public.

Brown's cartooning style combines oddball surrealism, with everyday frustrations and obervances to give her audiences a full body laughing experience; relevant to all generations and moments in time. She's a one-of-a-kind cartoonist, and this exhibit and retrospective is the perfect way to take it all in. Of course if you can't make it to San Fran, do yourself a favor and pick up the first comprehensive look at her career, collected in M.K. Brown Stranger than Life: Cartoons and Comics 1970-2013.

The exhibit runs from August 30, 2014 - February 15, 2015

SEATTLE: Jim Woodring at the University Bookstore

Jim Flyer
Is your mind's eye open? Can it possibly hold all of the beauty in the world? If not, then Jim Woodring's new book JIM is the collection of comics to prepare you. Built on foundation of hallucinations and nightmares, Jim is Woodring's alter-ego and allows him the creative freedom live in alternate dimensions and answer the question "What If" in a language he didn't even know existed.

Joe Garvin of News from Mill Creek and the University Bookstore recently reviewed Jim, "Anthropomorphic creatures resembling frogs and elephants occupy strange but uncannily familiar landscapes; beings traverse realms and undergo spontaneous transformations. Nevertheless, all seems to belong to a private and coherent symbolic language. This is the wondrous and unique sensation of reading Woodring's most personal work-the artist delving deeply into his imaginative consciousness, and creating artful transmissions back from his world.

Jim Woodring, the cartoonist, will be discuss and sign his book at the free event at the University Bookstore on Thursday, September 4th at 7pm. (4326 University Way NE, Seattle w 98105). The book is available for purchase in-store, by phone at (206) 634-3400, or at ubookstore.com, on the date of the event.

Los Angeles: Animated Prison Pit Screening and Panel
Written by Anna Pederson | Filed under Things to seeJohnny Ryanevents 26 Aug 2014 8:00 AM

PP screening

Saturday, August 30

Boy oh boy, have we got a treat for you. As a part of the Everything Is Festival series, put on by the amazing Cine Family, you can not only screen the animated version of the first Prison Pit book, you can hear a bunch of funny people talk about how amazing it is afterwards! Of course the indescribable author of Prison Pit, Johnny Ryan, will be there, but joining him on the panel will be comedians, Rick Shapiro and Blake Anderson. You may remember the brilliant Shapiro for his reoccuring portrayal of "the angry poet" on Conan O'Brien, and Anderson from the all-star show, Workaholics (and for having fabulous hair).

The screening begins at 2:45 pm, and these gentelmen and scholars will all be there to help guide you through the supremely wicked and grotesque battlefield on the prison pit universe of hyperviolence and hyperhilarity. If your favorite W.W.E. personas came to life and unleashed the worst horrors on each other, you'll be barely scratching the surface of how amazing Prison Pit, and its DVD companion are.

Both both were a huge hit at this years San Diego Comic-con, and now you can check out why the f@$k everyone is talking about the best thing since slorge-arms.

Hip Hop Family tree 2
Hometown hero, Ed Piskor, is coming back atcha with the release of Hip Hop Family Tree Vol. 2 at 7pm on Saturday, September 23rd. At this release party at Copacetic Comics, you may need to bring the bucks but never the beats.

Book 2 covers the early years of 1981-1983, when Hip Hop has made a big transition from the parks and rec rooms to downtown clubs and vinyl records. As meticulously documented in Piskor's panels, the performers make moves to separate themselves from the paying customers by dressing more and more flamboyantly until a young group called RUN-DMC comes on the scene to take things back to the streets. So party people gather 'round and count down to this sweet release party this Saturday!
