Hey look, some photos of the Newave! exhibit opening and book launch party last Saturday at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, nicked without permission from our pal (and Newave! contributor) J.R. Williams's Facebook page. We'll bring you more pics if/when they surface (got some? let us know!). Above, David Lasky and someone unidentified...

Peter Bagge at Comixtravaganza, Seattle Public Library, Jan. 30, 2010

Peter Bagge held forth to an appreciative crowd at Seattle's Central Library on Saturday to close out this month's Comixtravaganza programming at SPL, presenting a slideshow and discussing his work and career, followed by a lively Q&A session. Check out photos of the whole slideshow on our Flickr page, including a couple of shots of David Lasky (Hotwire) and Greg Stump (The Comics Journal) leading an all-ages comics workshop. SPL should be posting the audio from Peter's talk on their website soon — we'll let you know when that's up (and if we're feeling ambitious, maybe we'll make a video slideshow incorporating the audio... no promises, though).

NEWAVE! Mini Comics Anthology Party at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Jim BlanchardFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 21 Jan 2010 2:15 PM

NEWAVE! The Underground Mini Comix of the 1980s

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition and publication party for NEWAVE! The Underground Mini Comix of the 1980s on Saturday, January 30 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. This event promises to be both entertaining and enlightening. The public is invited to join us for this festive reunion of influential independent cartoonists.

Self published mini comics in the 1970s and 1980s were the direct descendants of the Underground Comix movement of the 1960s hippie era. Early practitioners photocopied, stapled and distributed their miniature zines at comic book conventions and emerging comic book specialty shops. The immediacy and independence of these publications gave rise to today's popular alternative comics movement.

Mini comics creator Michael Dowers, former publisher of Starhead Comix and editor at Fantagraphics Books, compiled this impressive anthology. Included are interviews and commentary by the artists as well as the rare mini comics themselves.

The exhibition will feature original art and graphics by underground mini comix pioneers Jaimie Alder, Jim Blanchard, Wayne Gibson, David Lasky, Wayno, J.R. Williams, Steve Willis, Dennis Worden, and XNO. NEWAVE editor Michael Dowers will produce and distribute a mini comic on site. A comix jam by contributing artists will be accompanied by music from local indie rock band "iji."

Don't miss this splendid occasion on Saturday, January 30. Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street at Airport Way in the heart of Georgetown.

Greetings from Hotwire USA by Tim Lane

This Great Show includes some of the best and boldest talents working in comix today. Here's a chance to see original art work by Glenn Head, Danny Hellman, Mark Dean Veca, David Sandlin, Tim Lane, Jayr Pulga, Chadwick Whitehead, Sam Henderson, Mary Fleener, Rick Altergott, R. Sikoryak, and Mats!?....

Many of these exciting artists will be on hand to meet you, discuss their work, and their insights into the comics scene. HOTWIRE's contributors have graced the pages of the very best comix anthologies — such as RAW, R. Crumb's WEIRDO, SNAKE EYES, DRAWN AND QUARTERLY, as well as mainstream publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Nickelodeon, and The Village Voice.

It will be a terrific show, curated by Scott Eder, who has many cool comic art shows to his credit. Now's your chance to get a good look at HOTWIRE art and it's artists — in person!

Drinks and food will be served, the scene will be mellow, the vibes happening.... This is definitely an art scene worth making the trek to!
