Jay Ryan/Paul Hornschemeier tour poster

Paul Hornschemeier and Jay Ryan's joint book tour has one last previously unannounced stop back in their mutual hometown of Chicago tonight:

"We'll be heading directly from the airport to Home Room's 101 Lecture Show at the Hungry Brain in Chicago to give a final slide show presentation, answer people's questions, sign books, and try to get the feeling back in our toes after re-embracing Chicago's chill."

The Fun Never Stops!

Portable Grindhouse mural

We hope that in all the excitement over the 3rd Anniversary Party this Saturday at Fantagraphics Bookstore — for which we have assembled the most amazing group of cartoonists ever — you don't overlook the equally auspicious Portable Grindhouse panel discussion on Sunday, December 13 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. It promises to be both entertaining and enlightening.

Participants include artist Lisa Petrucci of Something Weird, the world's premier purveyor of psychotronic film (and the subject of a new art book KICKASS KUTIES from Dark Horse); cartoonist Marc Palm of the exalted Scarecrow Video; Seattle Times pop culture correspondent Mark Rahner and Robert Horton, movie critic at KUOW-FM and film curator for the Frye Art Museum, who together write the acclaimed horror comic ROTTEN. The panel will be moderated by PORTABLE GRINDHOUSE editor Jacques Boyreau. The panel will be followed by a reception and book signing.

Don't you dare miss either of these events or you'll regret it to the day you die and we'll be forced to taunt you with the infantile chant "Neener, neener, neener - we told you so." Sure, it's unbecoming, but sometimes we can't help ourselves.

[Ed. note: Click on the mural image above to download a high-res version you can use as a desktop background or what-have-you!]

Al Columbia Appearance and Signing at Ada Books in Providence R.I.
Written by Jacq Cohen | Filed under eventsAl Columbia 9 Dec 2009 2:19 PM

Pim & Francie: The Golden Bear Days by Al Columbia

Al Columbia will be at Ada Books for two hours on December 11th from 6pm to 8pm to sign his new book, Pim & Francie: The Golden Bear Days.

Ada Books Al Columbia
717 Westminster Street December 11, 2009
Providence RI, 02903 6pm to 8pm
401.432.6222

"A lucid nightmare, Al Columbia's dazzlingly well-drawn Pim & Francie features vignettes of its young protagonists menaced by creepy relatives or starring in exceedingly grim fairy tales. These inky visions seem unearthed from the deepest vaults of Uncle Walt's id." - R.C. Baker, Village Voice

"[Pim and Francie] showcases…Columbia's self-frustrating mastery: his absolute command of the idiom of lush, old-fashioned cartooning, and the unshakable eeriness of his visions of horror." - Publishers Weekly

Portable Grindhouse at Scarecrow Video

Portable Grindhouse at Scarecrow Video

How rad is this: the folks down the street at Seattle's rightly venerated Scarecrow Video have gone through Portable Grindhouse: The Lost Art of the VHS Box and put together a special rental section of titles found in the book. (Take a close look at the image above.) Scarecrow's Marc Palm, who will appear on Sunday's Portable Grindhouse panel at Fantagraphics Bookstore, explains on the Scarecrow blog.

Dutch Art Star Femke Hiemstra Rocks Seattle this Weekend
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Femke HiemstraFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 7 Dec 2009 5:19 PM

Femke Hiemstra artwork

The talented and lovely Femke Hiemstra visits Seattle from Amsterdam showing new paintings on Friday at Roq la Rue and as a guest at the wild 3rd anniversary party at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on Saturday.

Roq la Rue proprietor and lowbrow culture maven Kirsten Anderson observes, "Drawing on a range of influences from firework wrappers to Japanese woodblock prints, Femke's use of both pop culture detritus and child-like fantasy create a vibrant playground for the imagination, with each piece looking like a portal for a fantastic adventure. It is left to the viewer to imagine the story that lies inside."

On Saturday Femke will sign copies of her recent book ROCK CANDY (introduction by Kirsten Anderson). She joins an amazing cast including Paul Hornschemeier and Jay Ryan from Chicago, Dame Darcy and Jacques Boyreau from Portland, and Seattle's own Peter Bagge, Ellen Forney, Jim Woodring, Scott Musgrove, and Jim Blanchard with music, refreshments, and comix, natch. The holiday party of the season.

Jay Ryan & his book at Fantagraphics Bookstore 3rd Anniversary
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Fantagraphics Bookstoreevents 1 Dec 2009 11:26 AM

Animals and Objects In and Out of Water by Jay Ryan

We've been remiss in reminding you that Jay Ryan, one of the many special guests at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery's 3rd Anniversary celebration on Saturday Dec. 12, appears as part of his current book tour for the new collection of his poster art, Animals and Objects In and Out of Water, published by our colleagues at Akashic Books. (You may recall from our previous announcement that this joint tour with Paul Hornschemeier and his new collection from Fantagraphics, All and Sundry, begins its West Coast leg in L.A. on Monday, Dec. 7.) Jay's posters have been a mainstay of the indie-culture scene since the good old mid-1990s and hang in the households of many aficionados of the good and interesting, including yours truly — can't wait to check out the book at the event!
