Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Paul HornschemeierJim RuggFantagraphics BookstoreeventsEric Reynolds 12 Feb 2014 2:10 PM

Benton_graphic

Don’t miss an opportunity to meet Gregory Benton at Fantagraphics Bookstore on Saturday, February 22 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM as he presents his new graphic novel B + F. Benton's award winning fable explores an otherworldly forest with a woman and a dog as they encounter its denizens, both benevolent and malicious. A wordless meditation on goodwill, hostility, and isolation. Join us in welcoming this engaging artist to Seattle. (Please note: the previously announced musical guest appearance by Jeremy Spencer at Georgetown Records has been cancelled due to illness.)

Foxing_final

The following Wednesday, February 26 from 7:00 to 11:00 PM we host Foxing & Friends, an AWP kickoff event presented by A Strange Object, The Austin Review, Write Bloody Publishing, and Foxing Quarterly. The party features readings, refreshments, and a Post-It show with sticky art by Paul Hornschemeier, Alex Schubert, Jim Rugg, Sabrina Elliott, Ryan Cecil Smith, our own Eric Reynolds, and many more! Free fun with our small press friends visiting Seattle for the Association of Writers & Writing Programs conference.

Written by janice headley | Filed under Ron Regé Jrevents 12 Feb 2014 8:13 AM

Los Angeles, brace yourself for the wonder of Ron Regé, Jr.'s Cartoon Utopia, coming March 1st to the gallery Dem Passwords in Los Angeles!

Ron relates on his blog, "If you were to go way back in the archive of this blog, you would notice me talking about The Cartoon Utopia as of a set of concepts & ideas that I was creating art with, not simply the title of my book. The project started as a set of drawings that were displayed in solo art shows around the world."

The utopia lives on! A year after the book's release, Ron is debuting the exhibit Cartoon Utopia 2014, featuring brand-new drawings that he's been working on since the beginning of the year!  Like this one:

Don't miss the launch of Cartoon Utopia 2014Dem Passwords is located at 5413 West Adams Blvd. in Los Angeles.

Conor Stechschulte at the NY Comics & Picture-Story Symposium!
Written by janice headley | Filed under eventsConor Stechschulte 10 Feb 2014 9:33 AM

On Tuesday, February 11th, the NY Comics & Picture-Story Symposium will host a lecture from Conor Stechschulte, along with Christopher Adams, at 7:00 PM!

Stechschulte will present a comprehensive look at the ideas and influences that lead to the making of The Amateurs, his debut graphic novella about a severed human head that still seems to be talking. Stechschulte will discuss the lessons he learned while making the book, and discuss how he's applied those lessons to his current comics work. He adds: "Other topics that may or may not be glancingly addressed: accidental dismemberment, the true sound a screaming pig makes, drawing comics while standing up, and what affineurs and cartoonists have in common."

Don't miss this chance to learn more about this up-and-coming artist!

The NY Comics & Picture-Story Symposium will take place at the Kellen Auditorium in Parsons The New School at 66 Fifth Ave. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Tito On Ice at the Portland International Film Festival!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Max Anderssonevents 7 Feb 2014 9:13 AM

Portland! It's finally your chance to see the debut feature-length film Tito on Ice by world-famous cartoonist and filmmaker Max Andersson

After rave screenings in Seattle, Ottawa, and Vancouver, you can see how fantastic this is for yourself at the 37th Annual Portland International Film Festival this weekend!

Screenings are scheduled for Sunday, February 9th at 3:00 PM at Cinemagic, and on Sunday, February 16th at 1:00 PM at Cinema 21 (small theaters).

Bosnian Flat Dog

To promote their Fantagraphics book Bosnian Flat Dog, Andersson and fellow Swedish artist Lars Sjunnesson toured the countries of former Yugoslavia with a mummified Marshal Tito in a refrigerator.

Now comes the documentary, Tito on Ice, which takes Super 8 footage of their tour and animates it with cardboard cutouts and garbage and other recycled materials. The result is a surreal trip through the Balkans that is part promotion, part performance art, and part history of Marshal Tito and the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. It’s also about the underground arts and music venues that popped up when the country split apart.

Through it all there is a comics creator’s eye at work: live-action interviews suddenly switch to animation, and more than 50 sets were built for the film, all shot and animated on Super 8 film. Tito on Ice is a joyous trip through the war torn subconscious of an underground artist.

The Mad World of Virgil Partch at Fantagraphics Bookstore this Saturday!
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Virgil PartchFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 7 Feb 2014 12:24 AM

Vip: The Mad World of Virgil Partch

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Virgil Partch, one of mid-century America’s most influential humorists. Vip: The Mad World of Virgil Partch celebrates the legacy of this notorious cartoonist. A display of art and artifacts from the book opens Saturday, February 8 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

Virgil Partch burst onto the pages of the nation’s magazines with his captivating cartoons virtually overnight. His irreverent observations inspired a new breed of post-war comedians and cartoonists. Known by his signature, “Vip,” his work adorned books, advertisements, album covers, beer cans, cocktail napkins, and other accoutrements of mid-century American culture. The show at Fantagraphics Bookstore will demonstrate the diverse range of Partch’s appealing aesthetic.

The opening this Saturday coincides with the festive Georgetown Art Attack, featuring colorful visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale, only minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 22 when we host a signing by talented young cartoonist Gregory Benton followed by an in-store session with original Fleetwood Mac guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Jeremy Spencer.

Famed Fleetwood Mac Guitarist Jeremy Spencer at Fantagraphics Bookstore/Georgetown Records!
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under rockFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 4 Feb 2014 3:18 PM

Visitors to the Gregory Benton signing on Saturday, February 22 are in for an unforgettable evening as Fantagraphics Bookstore and Georgetown Records host an in-store performance by celebrated blues musician Jeremy Spencer. An original member of Fleetwood Mac, Spencer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He played on the band's timeless early hits like "Black Magic Woman," "Albatross," "Oh Well," and countless others. He frequently fronted Fleetwood Mac, channeling legends like Elmore James and Elvis during their raucous live shows. Check out vintage Jeremy Spencer in Paris on New Year's Eve 1968.

Spencer will play songs from his recent International Record Store Day release Bend in the Road and the forthcoming Coventry Blue LP in advance of his show at the Columbia City Theater the following day. He's also an accomplished illustrator and cartoonist, as seen in his portraits of former band mates Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and fellow blues guitarist Eric Clapton below. Spencer's original artwork will be on display for the occasion. Don't miss this amazing evening of art, comix, and music.
