Fantagraphics at the 2014 Seattle Graphic Novel Panel and After-Party!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Megan KelsoKristy ValentiFantagraphics BookstoreeventsDavid Lasky 10 Jan 2014 12:33 PM

Kick off 2014 with the fourth annual Graphic Novel Panel, held by our friends at the Seattle Graphics Arts Guild! Every year, it just gets better and better, and here's what you can expect on Saturday, January 25th:

From 10:00 AM to Noon, the amazing Megan Kelso will lead a workshop on "Comics for Writers" -- This workshop is for writers who are interested in comics and want to dip their toe in but who may be self-conscious about their drawing skills. Perfect!  Megan will lead the class in both drawing and writing exercises -- all drawing abilities are welcome!

The great David Lasky will also teach a workshop on "How to Make Your Own Mini-Comic"! He will guide you in booklet-making, the grammar of comics, and simple character design. Supplies and basic drawing tips will be provided. Drawing skills are helpful, but not necessary; the only prerequisite is a desire to communicate through the medium of comics.

Later that afternoon at 1:00 PM, our own Kristy Valenti will be on the Graphic Novel Panel, alongside Matthew Southworth, Crystal M. Rollins, Quenton Shaw, Travis Bundy, and moderator Mark Monlux. How do you get started? What are the essential tools? How do you build a career in today’s publishing climate? These are just some of the questions they'll explore in this panel! (And check out a great chat with Kristy here!)

And then join us for the after-party at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery from 4:30-6:00 PM.  Books will be available for purchase and signing by the artists!

This event is open to the public, and you can get your tickets here for either the class, the panel, or the whole shebang! Tickets are not needed to attend the after-party.

The Graphic Novel Panel 2013 takes place at the Seattle Design Center [ 5701 6th Avenue South, Plaza Building, Suite 370 ]. The Plaza Building entrance is on Orcas between 5th & 6th. Suite P370 is on three floors up from street level. Take the elevator to first floor, then glass elevator to third floor. From the Atrium Building cross the sky bridge to Plaza Building, take glass elevator to third floor. Free parking!

And, of course, the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM.

On January 7th, our friends at the Society of Illustrators launched the wonderful new exhibit, The Art of Rodrigues: An Exhibition of the Late, Great Charles Rodrigues!

Stop by and marvel at artwork by Charles Rodrigues, the sick mind behind some of the most outrageous, inventive, and offensive cartoons ever to appear in mass circulation magazines, including Stereo Review, Playboy, and (from its very first issue) the National Lampoon

They'll be hosting a Happy Hour and Reception for the exhibit on Wednesday, January 29th from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. A $10 cover charge includes one free drink ticket, buffet included.

Can't make it this month? The exhibit will run through March 8th, so definitely check it out, and then check out our collection Ray and Joe: The Story of a Man and His Dead Friend and Other Classic Comics, named one of "2013's Best Graphic Novels" by The Village Voice!

The Society of Illustrators is located at 128 East 63rd Street.

Julia Gfrörer Signing & Discussion at The Strand NYC!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Julia Gfrörerevents 8 Jan 2014 8:43 AM

Black is the Color

On Wednesday, January 15th, New York City is the place for Black is the Color!

Come celebrate the beautiful new graphic novel from Portland-based artist Julia Gfrörer. Called “moving” by The Comics Journal, Black is the Color is the sorrowful tale of an unfortunate sailor’s abandonment, and his melancholy meeting of a mermaid named Eulalia.

Come meet the artist noneother than Phoebe Gloeckner has called, "amongst the most promising artist/authors of her generation. Her work is spare and elegant, yet the hand of the artist is always evident in her line. Her characters inhabit cold or desolate environments, often on the brink of inanition or beyond, yet still yearning to love and be loved."

Escape a bleak winter chill for a night of comic shop talk beginning at 7:00 PM! You can either buy the book from The Strand or buy a $15 Strand Gift Card in order to attend this event. Both options admit one. Please note that payment is required for all online event orders at the time of checkout. The event will be located in The Strand's 3rd floor Rare Book Room at 828 Broadway at 12th Street.

Guantanamo Sketch Artist Janet Hamlin at Fantagraphics Bookstore on Saturday
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Janet HamlinFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 26 Dec 2013 12:26 PM

Janet Hamlin graphic

Please join us in Georgetown at Fantagraphics Bookstore on Saturday, December 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM as we host a reception and book signing with Janet Hamlin. Her fascinating book, Sketching Guantanamo, captures the conditions faced by detainees in the makeshift island internment compound.

Journalists at Guantanamo were subject to draconian security measures. Courtroom photography was banned. As a result, Hamlin's deft imagery provides the only visual record of these unparalleled proceedings. According to The New York Times, "When future historians search back in time to 'Camp Justice' and the rigidly controlled, tightly censored terrorist trials in Guantánamo, Cuba, they will likely linger over the vivid courtroom sketches of Janet Hamlin." The Stranger declares, "This is important."

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street (at Airport Way S.), only minutes from downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Ron Regé's Cartoon Utopia at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

The Cartoon Utopia

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to present The Cartoon Utopia, an exhibition and book signing with visionary cartoonist Ron Regé, Jr. opening Saturday, January 11 with a festive reception for the artist. The show continues through February 5, 2014.

In The Cartoon Utopia, Regé examines religious, mystical, and spiritual philosophies employing an imaginative narrative construct. The subject ideally suits the artist’s intriguing rendering technique. In the words of cartoonist Chris Ware, Regé is "One of a handful of cartoonists in the history of the medium to not only reinvent comics to suit his own idiosyncratic impulses and inspirations as an artist, but also to imbue it with his own peculiar, ever changing emotional energy. To me, he is unquestionably one of 'the greats.'"

The opening reception on Saturday, January 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM coincides with the colorful Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack featuring challenging visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street, at the corner of Airport Way S. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.
