Kickstarter: Art Spiegelman and a $250k stretch goal
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Shimura TakakoMoto HagioMatt ThornmangaKickstarterInio Asano 2 Dec 2013 5:14 AM
Thank you so much! We hit $200,000 yesterday and since then more great cartoonists have donated to the cause. The Kickstarter campaign will end Thursday morning at 10am, PST.

If the Fantagraphics Kickstarter hits a total of $250,000 we will increase our line of literary and experimental manga translation. We have been printing the fantastic Shimura Takako's Wandering Son series since 2011 (translated by Matt Thorn), a perennial title on the ALA Rainbow List for teen reading, in addition to Moto Hagio, who is widely considered the most beloved shōjo manga artist of all time. Hagio's The Heart of Thomas created a new genre of manga while the collected stories in A Drunken Dream  show off her masterful storytelling. This February we are proud to be publishing Inio Asano's Nijigahara Holograph, a mysterious and brooding tale, also available for pre-order on the Kickstarter. We want to translate even more per season, bringing English readers only the finest of manga to grace their bookshelves.

If you visit the main page of the Kickstarter, you'll also see that Art Spiegelman has donated several (11 total) different prints, all signed by the cartoonist himself. Here is one such beauty listed as SPIEGELMAN 10: a wrap around cover from a Boris Vian book, Vercoquin and the Plankton. Circa 1982 ($80)

SPIEGELMAN #11:  Vian 8 "A Snake for Everyone (librettos, songs and scenes), signed by Spiegelman. Circa 1985 ($80)

SPIEGELMAN #8: Vian 5 Dead Men All Have the Same Skin signed by Spiegelman. Circa 1980 ($80)

SPIEGELMAN #7: Vian 4 "The Commissar and the Green Panther, signed by Spiegelman. Circa 1984  ($80)

SPIEGELMAN #6: Vian 3. Hundred Sonnets, wrap around cover from a Boris Vian volume, signed by Spiegelman. Circa 1989 ($80)

SPIEGELMAN #5: "Vian 2" proof for Vian's collected short stories volume1, signed by Spiegelman. Circa 1986  7 3/4 x 11" ($80)

We continue to thank you for your generosity and hope to see just a little more in these last few days of the Kickstarter.

Spring-Summer 2014, part 15: Growing Old, Growing Up
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Shimura TakakomangaKickstarterJoyce FarmerComing Attractions 27 Nov 2013 6:13 PM

Our campaign to support our Spring-Summer 2014 season on Kickstarter is ongoing, and we're continuing to spotlight the books in question, a couple at a time. We've also put our season catalog online for you to browse. (Please note that all artwork, contents, prices, specs, and release dates are preliminary and subject to change.)

Special Exits prelim cover

Special Exits — Paperback Edition
by Joyce Farmer

208-page black & white 8" x 10" softcover • $22.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-760-4

The acclaimed, award-winning graphic novel, in a new softcover edition.

In the vein of Alison Bechdel or Harvey Pekar, Joyce Farmer's memoir chronicles the decline of the author's parents' health, their relationship with one another and with their daughter, and how they cope with the day-to-day emotional fragility of the most taxing time of their lives. Set in southern Los Angeles (which makes for a terrifying sequence as blind Rachel and ailing Lars are trapped in their home without power during the 1992 Rodney King riots), Farmer details the slow, inexorable decline in Lars's and Rachel's health, and perfectly captures the timbre of the exchanges between a long-married couple: the affectionate bickering; their gallows humor; their querulousness as their bodies break down.

Wandering Son 7 prelim cover

Wandering Son (Hourou Musuko / 放浪息子) Vol. 7
by Shimura Takako

200-page black & white (with some color) 7" x 9.5" hardcover • $24.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-750-5

Shimura Takako’s groundbreaking, critically acclaimed, and beloved Wandering Son continues to explore gender identity among its cast of middle school students in our 7th volume. Nitori-kun gets his first signs of acne. This may well be the end of the world. But when he turns to nationally famous model Anna-chan for help, events take an unexpected turn. Meanwhile, Nitori-kun and Chiba-san are scouted by the theater club after the success of their gender-bending play, The Rose of Versailles. But when Takatsuki-san congratulates Chiba-san, Chiba-san calls her a hypocrite. If Takatsuki-san wanted to join the theater club, she wouldn’t congratulate Chiba-san — she’d be jealous. So says Chiba-san, but what does she know?

It seems like the last volume just came out, and already we have advance copies of Shimura Takako's Wandering Son Vol. 6 to show off to you. The series is starting to take up a nice chunk of shelf space! The emotional complexity continues to deepen for our gender-questioning junior high heroes and their quirky cast of friends, rivals, crushes, mentors, teachers, and families.

Meanwhile, Vol. 5 inspired Terry Hong to write on the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center Bookdragon blog: "Sweet and gentle, with just enough angst and worry over changing bodies and emotional alliances. Creator Shimura Takako continues to share an enlightening journey toward maturity in a fluid new world that defies easy labels."

Impatient for it to hit bookstore shelves around New Year's? Pre-order now and you can be among the first to read it — we usually get our stock first!

Wandering Son Vol. 6 by Shimura Takako - Excerpt
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Shimura TakakopreviewsmangaComing Attractions 30 Oct 2013 5:27 PM

A gender-swapped class production of Romeo and Juliet... what could possibly be more fraught for a couple of gender-questioning junior high schoolers? Maybe shopping for underwear for their changing bodies? That's the territory Shimura Takako sends her heroes Nitori-kun and Takatsuki-san into in the new volume of Wandering Son, with their idiosyncratic cast of friends, rivals, mentors, teachers and families adding to the drama, embarrassment and laughs.

In our free downloadable excerpt of the complete first chapter, see what the kids are up to on the first half of their summer vacation. The book should be out right around Christmas or New Year's, and you can pre-order your copy right here.

Shimura Takako’s sensitive and charming series about two middle- schoolers wrestling with their gender identities continues.

Nitori Shuichi, the boy who wants to be a girl, and Takatsuki Yoshino, the girl who wants to be a boy, continue navigating the infatuations, jealousies, and embarrassments of preteen relationships during their first year of junior high.

Chiba-san won’t make up with Takatsuki-san, and no one can get over his or her crush. Takatsuki-san envies Chizuru-san’s boldness for showing up to school in a boy’s uniform, and begrudgingly shops for a bra. Nitori-kun and Mako (who also identifies as a girl) decide to record their voices to preserve them before they change. And: what’s up with the newbie teacher? There’s another gender-bending play in the works?!

Wandering Son Vols. 4 - 6 Subscription
Price: $65.97 $52.78 POSTPAID

Wandering Son has garnered extensive praise (from the GLBT community, from manga fans, and from comics fans in general) for its uniquely funny, warm, and sensitive treatment of the travails of two Japanese tweens who find themselves coping with the knotty issue of gender identification as they slowly realize that maybe they aren't who they were meant to be.

In this latest volume, love is in the air. It's in the trees and on the streets. It's hanging on the walls and piled in great heaps on the floor. Or is it really love? These sixth and seventh graders don't really know. But something is definitely amiss. They can't sleep, and when they do sleep they have strange dreams. They get angry and cry for no reason. They blush and grin like idiots for no reason. And it isn't even spring. But the standard rules apply: If A is in love with B, B is certain to be in love with C, and C is likely to be in love with D, or possibly A.

And now it seems a good third of the alphabet is in love with our shy protagonist, Nitori-kun. But the flip-side of love is jealousy, and hate. The simple friendships of childhood develop into the complex, tense relationships of adolescence. Friends become strangers, or worse. But while everyone seems to have caught the bug — even characters whose names you can't remember — Volume 4 revolves solidly around the triangle of Nitori-kun, Takatsuki-san, and Chiba-san. Yet centrifugal force seems to push the three away from each other, and there is a certain grimness as they say goodbye to elementary school, and put on the (highly gendered) uniforms of junior high school…
