Larry Reid, manager of the Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery was highlighted in the GIFTED insert of the latest issue of The Stranger (Vol. 23, No. 12). He gives you all you need to know about shopping, eating and fun fun fun in Georgetown this holiday season. From The Complete Peanuts collection we're publishing to 'seven-inch slabs by the Stranglers' ("Golden brown, texture like sun...") available in the other half of the store known as Georgetown Records, there is plenty to stuff stockings with, hand over at Channukah or leave on a friend's desk as a secret gift.
We've got music and books at the store but what about holiday movies? Larry recommends:
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians? Well I'll be, that's showing at Pacific Place 11 this December 5th and other places around the country(a laRiffTrax;so you have been forewarned, jokes are a-coming). Also in the GIFTED guide was a few Fantagraphics books that are perfect gifts for "Neat Nerds". Forget those sassy, sexy underoos OR pair them (ha HA!) with 3 New Stories Dash ShaworPretty in Ink: North American Women Cartoonists 1896-2013 by Trina Robbins, as pictured.
So pick up a copy of The Stranger for the full Larry Reid interview, stop by the Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery for some sweet alternative comics (and a story or two from Larry!).

I've been meaning to write about this for a while now, but frankly, there aren't words strong enough to describe my excitement for this collaboration between two of my all-time favorite artists, Jim Woodring and Yo La Tengo!
Their love story goes a long ways back, as we mentioned on the FLOG earlier this year when we premiered the band's most recent release Fade at the book launch party for Jim's collection Problematic: Sketchbook Drawings 2004-2012. And now Jim has taken the artwork for Fade and interpreted it into The Tree, a set of three figurines and a DVD produced by our friends at PressPop! We'll let them describe the rest:
Experience the magical collaboration of Yo La Tengo and Jim Woodring. The three band members, Ira, Georgia and James come to life as 3 original characters in the land of “the Tree!”
Present/past/future, the real/unreal, visible/invisible, sadness/joy…… "the Tree” will grow, enveloping all. And the ecstatic creatures that inhabit “the Tree” are the 3 beings blessed by the god of music. The curtain has been raised for Woodring’s mysterious and psychedelic dream land. But the story has just begun……
This product is a set of DVD and 3 soft-vinyl dolls. The DVD contains an original animation (5:20 minutes) of a mind-blowing colorful dream world that centers on “the Tree” and the 3 whimsical characters. It is made by a Japanese production company that specialize in hand-drawn animation: drop. And of course, All NEW music by Yo La Tengo! The 3 colorful soft-vinyl dolls were sculpted by Japanese master sculptor: Tomohiro Yasui. Beautiful packaging design by Jim Woodring with a bonus comic on the back.
As you can see, the resemblance is striking! These figures are currently available (in incredibly limited quanties) at the merch table on the band's European tour, or you can also pre-order a set of your own at the Matador Records website. I am already planning for them to take a ride on Mr. Bumper, and maybe get in some battles with Lorbo.
Vacancies are available for a brand new Jim Flora art print, released just last week!
Titled Tenement K, this limited edition fine art print features residents who are bawdy, musical, criminal, and/or exhibitionistic. Doesn't matter if you're rowdy, serpentine, or headless — the landlord will rent you a room. If you were a mutant miscreant, you'd be home by now.
The previously unpublished and uncirculated work, which dates from the 1940s, is owned by a private collector who allowed them to have the work professionally photographed for print reproduction. Although the work is untitled, they have provisionally named it Tenement K to differentiate it from other untitled Jim Flora works.
Only forty prints of Tenement K were produced for this edition, so don't delay -- move in today !
You can get yourself some more Jim Flora beauty in our brand new collection The High Fidelity Art of Jim Flora, available now!
To celebrate the publication of The High Fidelity Art of Jim Flora, our fourth anthology of Jim Flora artwork — and one which features all of Flora's known album covers — the infamous Mambo for Cats is dancing yet again!
Although the original print run sold out last year, a new revived edition is now available. It's about album-cover size (40% smaller than the original screen print), and is produced on different paper with different inks thru an entirely different printing process (inkjet, or giclée). One other significant difference: the screen print was on cream-colored stock; the giclée stock is white.
Pounce on the limited edition launch price while you can!
Kupperman has teamed up with online shop TopatoCo to release a new series of poster prints and that great tee shown above! That Snake 'n' Bacon print demands to be framed in your kitchen! Imagine Mark Twain's murder in your study!
Prints measure about 11" X 16", and are printed on high quality matte paper. Go get yourself some, before I buy it all for meeeee!!!
It's sad, but true: our good friends at Americaware are calling it a day -- so this is your very, very last chance to score some comfy tees and hoodies featuring artwork by comics legends Peter Bagge, Jim Blanchard, Basil Wolverton and Jim Woodring.
Quantities are super-limited (I'm already seeing "out-of-stock" notices on their website!), and these designs will not be reprinted! Don't miss out!
Johnny Ryan will be whippin' it out with a solo art show, Johnny Ryan's Chicks With Dicks, opening this Saturday, July 27th at Мишка in Los Angeles!
Johnny Ryan's Chicks With Dicks will feature over sixty illustrations based on Jack Chick religious pamphlets from the 1960s onward. Our friends at Мишка explain: "For those who aren't historians on religious propaganda from fifty years ago, Jack Chick was an artist who published wild fire and brimstone comics about everyone going to hell for pretty much any minor offense. The comics read as a something an Evangelical Sunday school teacher might create, if they were possessed by the same demons that inspire death metal cover art. Obviously, Chick was very successful in saving souls of the damned, and obviously Johnny Ryan needed to recreate these images with dicks inserted throughout."Johnny will also be debuting two exclusive new t-shirt designs, available only at this art show (pic swiped from his Instagram, below, and yes, he's back on there!):
The opening reception for Johnny Ryan's Chicks With Dicks runs from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. There'll be booze and some blasphemous tunes to really cement your place at the left hand of Beezlebub. There'll also be some regular Johnny Ryan pieces for sale as well, for all of you more pious folks. Мишка is located at 128 S. La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles.
CMYK process print (as you can see above) on an organic, 100% cotton white t-shirt. Majestic to all of the senses.
Available now at bottleofsmoke.co.uk.
Want to hug a record but afraid you'll scratch it? Raffie and Foppie are for you!
Chicago-based label FPE Records asked our own Ron Regé, Jr. to draw some dancing records for an ad, and once they saw the results, they wanted to hug 'em! So, the idea for stuffed Raffie and Foppie record dolls was born.
FPE currently launched a Kickstarter to get these cuties manufactured, so check it out and get yourself some huggable new friends!
