Scheduled to arrive around the end of this month, Esther Pearl Watson's Unlovable is a glitter-encrusted, hot pink hunk of high school humiliation, heartbreak, halitosis, hairspray and hilarity from the pages of Bust magazine. Monologues for Calculating the Density of Black Holes by Anders Nilsen

Monologues for Calculating the Density of Black Holes
By Anders Nilsen

Monologues for Calculating the Density of Black Holes takes up where the artist’s first volume, Monologues for the Coming Plague, left off. Like Coming Plague, Density of Black Holes is a creatively experimental laboratory, comprising a collection of free flowing stream-of-consciousness gags, strips, and drawings that slowly coalesce into an unexpectedly compelling and complex narrative. The hints of story that came together in Coming Plague are extrapolated and expanded upon and grow to incorporate some of Nilsen's other outré strips from the anthology MOME, two of which are reprinted here in expanded form. The book is an audacious investigation into the rhythms of storytelling, the blurring of media, and an exercise in reconciling contrasts. It is playful, provocative and serious all at once — another tour de force by Anders Nilsen, impeccably and uniquely designed, in monochrome and full color.

Beasts! Book 1 - Softcover Edition

Beasts! Book 1 (Softcover Edition)
By various artists; curated by Jacob Covey

After selling out two hardcover editions, Beasts! returns in a beautiful new softcover edition. Beasts! is a classic mythological menagerie, comprised only of creatures that were thought at one time to actually exist, depicted by about a hundred of the most acclaimed artists and cartoonists coming from the most avant-garde ambits of the art world. The Beasts project has fired the imaginations of luminaries such as Tony Millionaire, Souther Salazar, Jeff Soto, Dave Cooper, Tim Biskup, Seonna Hong, Jeremy Fish, James Jean, and Jay Ryan, who will present never-before-seen art completely original to this book, superbly laid out in breathtaking, full-color two-page spreads. Beasts! collects many of the best visual artists from the worlds of comics, skateboarding, rock graphics, science-fiction, children's books, commercial and fine art. The book is conceived and designed by Jacob Covey, lead art director for Fantagraphics (Dennis the Menace, Popeye, Willie & Joe, etc.) and a well-regarded designer and artist in his own right in the Northwest rock and arts community. Other contributors include: Amanda Visell, Anders Nilsen, Andrew Brandou, Art Chantry, Brian Ralph, Bwana Spoons, Dave Cooper, Deth P. Sun, Esther Pearl Watson, Jason, Jesse LeDoux, Johnny Ryan, Jordan Crane, Keith Shore, Little Friends of Printmaking, Marc Bell, Martin Cendreda, Martin Ontiveros, Mat Brinkman, R. Kikuo Johnson, Richard Sala, Sammy Harkham, Seonna Hong, Stan Sakai, S. britt, Stella Im Hultberg, Steven Weissman, Tom Gauld, Tyler Stout and many more.

Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under new releasesNew Comics Day 24 Dec 2008 1:16 PM
I thought I saw one source say that Beasts! Book 2 was going to arrive in comic shops this week, but it's not on the official list. Maybe give a call to your local shop -- you'll want to do that anyway, to confirm their holiday hours. Otherwise, nothing from us is scheduled to ship this week.

Explainers: The Complete Village Voice Strips (1956-66) [First Edition - Imperfect Copies]
By Jules Feiffer

Our final few copies of the First Edition all bear minor damage incurred in shipping and handling. We are offering them at a discounted price. (The Second Edition is due in January 2009.) Other sellers are currently offering this book at inflated collector prices -- get yours right now for a steal!

In 1956, a relatively unknown cartoonist by the name of Jules Feiffer started contributing a strip to the only alternative weekly published in the US, a small radical newspaper called The Village Voice. His strip tackled just about every issue, private and public, that affected the sentient American: relationships, sexuality, love, family, parents, children, psychoanalysis, neuroses, presidents, politicians, media, race, class, labor, religiion, foreign policy, war, and one or two other existential questions. It was the first time that the American public had been subjected to a weekly dose of comics that so uncompromisingly and wittily confronted individuals' private fears and society's public transgressions. Explainers is the first of four volumes collecting Feiffer's entire run of weekly strips from The Village Voice. This edition contains approximately 500 strips originally published between 1956 and 1966 in a brick-like landscape hardcover format.

568-page black & white 9.25" x 5.25" hardcover • regularly $28.99, sale price $19.95

The Squirrel Machine outtake by Hans Rickheit

On the interview blog Top Drawer, artist Hans Rickheit breaks some publishing news: our forthcoming publication of his graphic novel The Squirrel Machine, currently projected for a 2010 release. The interview includes some samples of Rickheit's pages, including some "deleted scenes" from The Squirrel Machine, such as above. (Link via Sean T. Collins.)
