Down with OPP*: Youth Is Wasted by Noah Van Sciver

** Yeah, You Know Me.

While we eagerly await the release of Saint Cole next month, Seattleites and travelers can stop by the Fantagraphics Bookstore to pick up Noah Van Sciver's collection Youth Is Wasted, out last year via AdHouse Books!

Youth Is Wasted compiles several short stories from Van Sciver, some that appeared in his self-published comic book series Blammo, and some published elsewhere, like our very own Mome anthology.  Van Sciver's amazing piece 1999 is reprinted here, which first appeared as a mini-comic from Retrofit: I remember reading it on the plane on the way home from a convention back in 2012, and being utterly floored. (No surprise, it was named a "Notable Comic of the Year" in the Best American Comics 2013 anthology.) There are also a few previously unpublished pieces to be found among the pages. Think of it as your Whitman's Samplers of Van Sciver to tide you over 'til you can gorge on Saint Cole.

We've got a few copies left in stock now at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Call Larry: (206) 658-0110.

Ghosts and Ruins by Ben Catmull - Cover

Today's book of the day: Ben Catmull's gorgeous hardcover coffee-table art book of ghost stories, Ghosts and Ruins!

Catmull's images are evocative, haunting masterpieces that never tread in graphic imagery, choosing instead to suggest horrors far more frightening than what they explicitly depict. With just the right touch of humor to balance the terror, Ghosts and Ruins is sure to please fans of Edward Gorey or Tim Burton, and makes a perfect gift book for the ghost story fan in your house.

Ghosts and Ruins is available all day today at 30% off! Previews and photosets are available on our order page.

January's Book-A-Day Sale: Couch Tag
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under sales specialsJesse Reklaw 4 Jan 2015 5:00 AM
Couch Tag by Jesse Reklaw - Cover

Next up in our January Book-A-Day sale is Jesse Reklaw's first long-form work, the tragicomic graphic memoir Couch Tag.

Presented as a series of comic novellas that together comprise a thoughtful, sometimes dark and often hilarious memoir about childhood, family, death, mental illness, sex and drug use, the entire book is told through cleverly inviting conceits like cat histories and card games.

The graphic novel is told in five parts: In "Thirteen Cats" (featured in The Best American Comics), Reklaw discovers coping mechanisms that mimic his family pets; "Toys I Love" relates the author's pre-pubescent brushes with deviant sexual activity, and the way innocence converges with real sexual trauma; "The Fred Robinson Story" tells the story of Reklaw's period stalking perfect strangers; "The Stacked Deck," in which hereditary influences towards criminal behavior, drug use and depression are explored via card games the author played with his family; and "Lessoned," a family history of mental illness.

Couch Tag is available at 20% off today only!
