Stan Sakai sent me an email asking if I knew anything about the strange beast pictured here. It's new to me and apparently the Japanese text doesn't address the creature. Does anyone know its story-- or at least a name?
Comments appreciated. Stan would like to know more about this unusual obakemono and I'd just love to see a hairy cyclopian leg show up in an Usagi Yojimbo story.
Japanese text says the monster's name is "san-sho" and it's Chinese monster. I believe it is called "山魈(shānxiāo)" in Chinese. I think someone with a knowledge of Chinese folklore can elaborate on this creature.

It seems that Chinese character and pinyin got garbled. Here's an English article about the creature, it doesn't say anything about the creature's appearance, but maybe you can see the correct name.

Hey thanks for the input on this. Stan also got a reply about Sansho over on his blog. http://usagiguy.livejournal.com/32916.html
Interesting that what started as a snake was portrayed as a single leg.
