Dixon's book
written by Gould, November 12, 2009
I heard you will be publishing a Stephen Dixon novel next year. Would it be possible to have a glimpse at the book cover yet? Thanks!

Hey Gould-

The day I learned we're publishing Stephen Dixon's next book I was a bit in disbelief. I had to verify with three different people that it was true before I could accept it. I've got a tentative cover designed and I will definitely make a post here on Flog when I feel like it's more finished. It's difficult to be designing a cover for someone who had such a major impact on me when I was younger (and who I still admire so much). So I'm not sure I want to post the image just yet.

I'm glad to hear you must be a Dixon fan. I hope everyone buys this book. It will be approximately 900 pages of uncollected short stories with this great title: What Is All This?

Dixon sent over a handful of self-portrait doodles that he's done over the top of his manuscripts for the book. I thought it would be interesting to try to use these, given the history of using portraits of the author on his jackets but I'm exploring doing a type-only cover. Something as obsessive as his writing.

Thanks Jacob for the answer!

A type only cover sounds like a great idea. That would make a difference since most of his recent covers involved drawings or portraits.

Dixon writes on a old type machine, and usually annotates his manuscript a lot. Could be interesting to use.

Anyway, can't wait to see your work. Good luck!

Hey Christophe (just realized your "Gould" moniker was, presumably, a Dixon reference)- FYI, the Dixon rough cover was just released. It's not final but it's out there. Check today's blog posts if you happen to be receiving emails from this post.

The cover as shown is only roughly what I'm going for with the final treatment but I can't really elaborate on it just yet.

Best,
Jacob

Thanks Jacob! Great work. Seems like a fresh departure from Dixon's recent book covers. Colors are not too vivid, that's nice. The use of his typewriting & collage should match Dixon's prose. Well done. May 2010 is so far away...

P.S. I mistakenly put my full name in two repetitive posts above. Asked the webmaster to remove that. Can you push my inquiry again? Thanks.
