Seattle, WA - In conjuction with our favorite video store non-profit, Scarecrow Video, Fantagraphics is pleased to host an in-store screening of the film, Wild Style, with an intro and signing to follow with Hip Hop Family Treecartoonist, Ed Piskor.
Wild Stylewas first released in 1983 and featured the hottest graffiti artists of the day. Not only that, it captured a perfect snapshot of Hip-Hop culture of New York City in the early '80s. Breakdancing, freestyle, scratching by Grandmaster Flash, and of course some of the most classic and notorious graffiti artists and their work.
And in the 2000's, Ed Piskor has been able to illustrate these moments and more in his New York Times Graphic Bestseller series, Hip Hop Family Tree. Engaging, funny, historical speak to HHFT and Wild Style, making their pairing at Scarecrow Video all the more perfect.

The time is nigh to get your sea legs so strap on your cutlass and step aboard the good ship Criminal Records this coming Saturday, November 8th. Nefarious outlaw among the waves, Drew Weing will be signing and sketching in copies of his freshly reprinted graphic novel, Set to Sea. This rollicking adventure and ballad follows the life of an aspiring poet (and big lug) as he is shanghaied aboard a ship bound for Hong Kong, changing his notions on the romantic sea life. Weing will also give a small presentation about life under the stars and above the murky depths.

This is the first of two volumes reprinting copious amounts of comics stories and recounting the career of cartoonist Basil Wolverton. Based on his correspondence and journals, the biographical portion of the books follows Wolverton from childhood to adult day-to-day life as freelance cartoonist, itinerant handyman, persistent contest enterer, and local pastor of the Radio Church of God. Wolverton lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest, unique among the first generation of comic book pioneers. In the precious period before the industry calcified into a commercial institution, Wolverton was free to work under the radar to explore in detail his weird tales of the future. All of Wolverton's non-humorous comic book stories will be presented in full, along with prime examples of his humorous comics and dozens of pages of unpublished art, including editorial drawings, advertisements, caricatures, pulp illustrations, rejected comic book covers, and unsold features.
Washington D.C. - The Multicultural Student Services Center at George Washington University is hosting acclaimed journalist, music producer, and author, Pat Thomas. His premier book, Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975, is an interdiciplinary and multi-sensory look at the music, and sociopolitical atmosphere of the times that helped influence the creation of the Black Power movement.
To compliment this inspiring book, Pat Thomas is presenting a multi-media presentation that combines music, images, and spoken word recordings to present a bizarre and engaging connection between the Partridge Family and the Black Panther Party; Timothy Leary and Eldridge Cleaver; Amiri Baraka and Mowtown; and Bob Dyland and George Jackson.
Free and open to the public, this presentation takes place from 6:30-8:00 PM in the Multicultural Student Services Center on campus, room 209.
