MEET LEGENDARY LOVE AND ROCKETS CO-CREATOR GILBERT HERNANDEZ AT MIDTOWN COMICS

Fantagraphics Books and Midtown Comics are proud to present a rare New York City appearance by legendary graphic novelist and comic book creator Gilbert Hernandez. Hernandez, co-creator of the acclaimed LOVE AND ROCKETS series published by Fantagraphics Books since 1982, will be signing books and talking with fans to celebrate the release of his latest book, HIGH SOFT LISP. From the pages of Love and Rockets, HIGH SOFT LISP chronicles the life of one of comics' most seductive heroines. "Five six. Hundred twenty-eight pounds. Forty-three twenty-two thirty-six. High soft lisp. Genius level I.Q." That's how motivational speaker Mark Herrera sums up Rosalba "Fritz" Martinez, bombshell, former punkette, former psychiatrist, "Z" movie star - in this supremely sexy, constantly surprising graphic novel. This suite of stories, originally serialized in the second volume of Love and Rockets and fleshed out with a dozen brand new pages, creates an original and inventive (and very steamy) volume that works both as a standalone graphic novel and a further exploration of Hernandez's rich world.

ABOUT GILBERT HERNANDEZ

Gilbert Hernandez, born in 1957, enjoyed a pleasant childhood in Oxnard, California with four brothers and one sister. In Gilbert's words, they were "born into a world with comic books in the house." His childhood enthusiasm for comics was equaled only by his teenaged appetite for punk rock. Both he and his brother Jaime created eye-catching poster art for local bands like the Angry Samoans, Agent Orange, Black Flag and others through the early '80s.

Initiated by older brother Mario and bankrolled by younger brother Ismael, Gilbert created Love & Rockets #1 with his brother Jaime in 1981. It may have been a very small, black and white affair, but almost a quarter of a century later, the series is regarded as a modern classic and the Hernandez brothers continue to create some of the most startling, original, and intelligent comic art to be seen since the '60s underground boom. Gilbert's 30-year saga of his most famous character, Luba, is undeniably one of the defining bodies of work of its era. Gilbert lives in Las Vegas, NV, with his wife and daughter.
