Francisco Solano Lopez

Francisco Solano López (1928–2011) was one of the foremost Latin American comics artists of his generation, and cofounded the publishing company Frontera with Oesterheld. In addition to The Eternaut, he worked on edgy, literary works, including Evaristo: Deep City (written by Carlos Sampayo and released in the U.S. in the 1980s). Internationally renowned for his distinctive art style, he fled the Argentine government and relocated to Europe, where he worked on series such as Galaxus: The Thing from Outer Space and The Drowned World. In the 1990s, Fantagraphics released his collaboration with his son, the politically charged Ana; his comic book adaptation (with Jim Woodring) of the horror movie Freaks; and his prize-winning erotic work.
