"Game Over" Not Yet Over at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Fantagraphics Bookstoreeventsart shows 20 Aug 2012 9:01 AM

Game Over: Failed Alternative Video Games

Sadly, I was out of town when the show first opened, so yesterday was my first look at our latest exhibit Game Over: Failed Alternative Video Games, and holy heck -- it's a winner!

Inspired by video game journalist Bob Mackey's piece for 1Up.com, our very own Jen Vaughn conceptualized the “box art” of some of our most famous graphic novels reimagined as failed videogame adaptations. For example...

Prison Pit: the Video Game

How about Prison Pit for the Xbox 360? As Jen puts it, "even gorier than Mortal Kombat!" The box detail that cracked me up? "No quests here." Ain't that the truth!

Dungeon Quest for Wii

Speaking of quests, who wouldn't want to try out Dungeon Quest: Book Three for the Wii? Introducing new playable character, Lou the Little Forest Man! The box detail that made me laugh here: "Skip that next bag of weed and save up for Dungeon Quest 3..." HEE!

Game Over: Failed Alternative Video Games

If you live outside of Seattle and can't make it to the show, you can check out more of Jen's hilarious and awesome adapations over on the Fantagraphics Flickr

But if you do live around Seattle, don't let it be game over for you! You have until Wednesday, September 5th to check out the show. The Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street at Airport Way S. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Drawing Fire: Bill Mauldin and the WWII GI in Wheaton, IL!
Written by janice headley | Filed under eventsBill Mauldinart shows 17 Aug 2012 4:21 AM

The First Division Museum at Cantigny is right on target with their fantastic new exhibit saluting Bill Mauldin and his famous characters Willie & Joe!

Titled Drawing Fire: Bill Mauldin and the WWII GI, this exhibit tells the GI story using Mauldin’s cartoons and the some of the museum’s extensive but rarely seen World War II collection.

Visitors will see more than forty of Mauldin’s cartoons and a variety of artifacts including personal objects carried by soldiers, equipment, decorations, and letters written home during the war. In addition, an interactive allows visitors to hear German weapons and artillery that GIs would have faced.

The exhibit runs through Monday, September 3rd. The First Division Museum at Cantigny is located at 1s151 Winfield Road in Wheaton, IL.

Hat tip to The Comics Reporter for letting us know about this event!

There are two different designs to choose from: one has a literature theme and the other has a more general theme. Both feature page after page of Kate's delightful strips that landed her on the New York Times Bestselling Graphics Novels list and on the Best of 2011 list in Time Magazine!

Lewis Trondheim Book Signing in Brooklyn!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Lewis Trondheimevents 3 Aug 2012 10:13 AM

It's no lie! Get ready for the world premiere of Ralph Azham Vol. 1: Why Would You Lie to Someone You Love?, the brand new English-translation from French artist Lewis Trondheim!

And, yes, it's true! Lewis Trondheim himself will be in attendance at the book release party on Friday, August 10th at Bergen Street Comics in Brooklyn, NY!  Don't miss this rare opportunity to meet one of the greatest living cartoonists of our time!

The signing starts at 8:00 PM and is open to the public. Bergen Street Comics is located at 470 Bergen Street, between Flatbush & 5th Avenues. Bubbly will be served 'cause an appearance from Trondheim is definitely something to toast!

UPDATE: We just learned today (Fri. Aug. 10) that, due to a last-minute delay at the printer, Ralph Azham Vol. 1 will unfortunately not be debuting at the signing. Bummer! Lewis has many, many other fine titles so there will still be plenty of other books available to get signed.

2ND UPDATE: We've now learned that Lewis will be signing special bookplates for the store to put into books next week and have people pick up. So you'll still be able to pre-purchase a signed edition of Ralph Azham Vol. 1, hooray!
