In this second and concluding volume of On Their Frontlines, the answer is nuanced and compelling. The places these war brides end up could hardly be more different. Haru finds familiarity in the Japanese American community in Seattle, while Yoriko finds herself alienated and alone in rural Georgia. While both struggle with identity and belonging in their new home, Yoriko suffers the brunt of American intolerance, particularly as her mixed-race son comes of age.

A sweeping chronology, this narrative follows younger generations of Japanese Americans who take up the mantle of civil rights, aiming to hold America accountable for the wartime Internment and discrimination past and present. As time passes and queer activism is on the rise, Yoriko embraces a part of herself that she always kept buried, and decides to finally search for Haru, whom she'd given up on ever seeing again. In their twilight years, perhaps it is not too late to rekindle the relationship they should always have had.

Mangaka Marina Lisa Komiya created this series to humanize a lost generation of resilient Japanese women, and to imagine how queerness could fit into their story. But it has ultimately become a story of resistance — against patriarchy, against all manner of systemic prejudice and violence, and against the erasure of the Japanese American past.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0322/7339/9944/files/on-their-frontlines_165c65a4-a0e0-4546-a345-42419f7acd0a.png?v=1792011118
