A woman wreaks havoc in Jeremy Baum’s dystopic, debut graphic novel.
Set in a dystopian future, alternating between current time and flashbacks, between an urban environment and a natural landscape, Dörfler is as much about space and time as it is about the characters who inhabit the two milieux. Strange inter-dimensional creatures live in the ancient lands of the Northern Mountains, where electronic and engine powered machinery is rendered inoperable. The city is a police state where the military subjects its citizens to experiments that turn memory and identity into malleable, political tools. While one woman wreaks havoc against the totalitarian state in revenge for what they’d done to her, two lovers wander through the Northern Mountains trying to distinguish between real and false memories. The towering landscapes, reflected in the very dimensions of the book itself, play an important role in the story—dizzying skyscrapers of rock formations and trees in contrast to the desolate, vertiginous cityscape that looks like a decaying version of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. A bold and sure to be talked-about debut graphic novel.
Praise
"This is a very lovely and compelling piece that rewards repeated visits without ever completely resolving itself. ...[T]his book is a hallucinogen in print. It is obviously meant as a kind of graphical meditation on time, memory, dream states, erotic revelry, and the mysteries of consciousness." — Gareth Branwyn - Boing Boing
"Following a trio of mysteriously-connected women, this debut graphic novel is alive with magic, eroticism, and futuristic cityscapes. The rich illustrations are equally striking when detailing tech or magic, setting Baum up to be one of comics’ powerhouses." — Largehearted Boy
"...Baum is a celebrated illustrator... of beautifully surreal, darkly playful comics." — Alex Gordon - Pittsburgh City Paper
"Jeremy Baum’s comics... imply secret worlds inside our heads and secret worlds inside our hearts. ... His comic work implies a whole complex panoply of a universe that sucks the reader in and doesn’t let them go. ... Baum is one of those creators who seems to work on multiple levels simultaneously, playing with his favorite recurring motifs and his absorbing eye for detail to create a graphic novel that feels like no other. ... Dörfler is erotic and eerie, mysterious and magnificent." — Jason Sacks - Comics Bulletin
"A stunning, evocative comic. Dörfler is equal parts fantasy, science fiction, Heavy Metal pin-up erotica, and every trope from all of the above wrapped into a gorgeous hardcover, and I can’t wait to see what comes next." — Quincy Rhoads - Enclave
