Murderburg

On sale date: March 11, 2025

Off the coast of Maine, behind flesh-eating fog, lies the island of Muderburg, less-than-affectionately dubbed Murderburg. When the notorious mobster Leo Scazzo and his wife Antonia endeavor to leave their life of crime behind them, they pack up their three children, along with their murderous ways, and head to the lush enclave of Muderburg to start anew. The Scazzo crew runs the curious little island, with Leo as mayor, Antonio as the enviable first lady, and eldest daughter Isabell serving as the intrepid publisher of the weekly paper, The Murderburg Beacon.

In this collection of six stories, alternative comix great Carol Lay illustrates a portrait of a family whose villainy is only narrowly outweighed by their devotion to each other and the inhabitants of their own little corner of hell. Even on an isle as bucolic as Murderburg, this lawless first family still manages to scandalize, vandalize, and entertain. But now that they have found the crime den of their dreams, there’s not a single trash-slinging Snobunquit neighbor or dangerously seductive arms dealer that could best these Scazzos.

Orders of Murderburg include a bookplate signed by Carol Lay while supplies last!

Praise

"The set up of the unpalatable in ordinary surroundings and the loving relationship between husband and wife is very reminiscent of The Addams Family, but Carol Lay's plots are even funnier. ... Murderburg is a laugh riot bursting with intelligence." — The Slings & Arrows

"A winner... delightful. Readers with no knowledge of Lay's prior work can simply enjoy it as a rollicking new tale, while fans familiar with her career in illustration, comic strips and Simpsons Comics will thrill to this rare long-form work." — Cinema Sentries

"In this collection of six stories, alternative comix great Carol Lay illustrates a portrait of a family whose villainy is only narrowly outweighed by their devotion to each other and the inhabitants of their own little corner of hell." — Solrad

"Lay excels at coming up with absurd comedic premises. The characters themselves are all rather static, which is fine because they exist to provide a structure to hang jokes on. The episodic quality of the stories makes it feel like a demented, modern version of a Harvey comic, which isn't surprising for someone who worked on the Simpsons comics." — High-Low Comics
