Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather: The Fantagraphics Studio Edition

The original John Severin art behind an original take on Marvel's Rawhide Kid—and the full color version just for good measure!

In 2003, 55 years into a comics career of unwavering integrity, the 82-year-old John Severin found a way to combine the comic timing of his classic MAD parodies with the realistic figuration and meticulous attention to factual visual detail of his Westerns and war comics in a return to Rawhide Kid that caused fandom's collective jaw to drop. Incidentally, he also showed that he was still one of the hippest artists in comics.

The five-issue Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather brought its iconic gunfighter hero out of the closet for a witty and thrilling tale of gay machismo. Now for the first time, every page of the original pencil-and-ink art, scanned in crisp high resolution black and white can be seen unencumbered by words in a revealing oversize Studio Edition produced by Fantagraphics in collaboration with Marvel Comics. But, in addition to the black-and-white line art, this collector edition also includes the entire story as it originally appeared in full color, so it can be both easily read as a narrative and studied as original art.
