The Darkest Night in Gaza: A Graphic Novel

The story of a photojournalist in Gaza and what he owes to those he photographs.

Giulio, an Italian photojournalist, is tasked with entering Gaza to capture the face of genocide. At first, he is detached, hunting for the glory of a Pulitzer, and the perfect shot of despair that will win it for him. As the days drag on and the atrocity persists, he’s forced to reflect on the faces that look back.

Across the ruined expanse of Gaza, he chronicles the stories of Palestinian survivors. He meets dance instructors who resist the physical and spiritual assault of the Israeli operation through defiant joy. He converses with a fatigued Palestinian doctor as they discuss choked humanitarian supply lines through the filter of a cigarette.

Writer-artist duo Marco Sonseri and Gian Luca Doretto tell a powerfully humane story that emphasizes not only the human cost of the ongoing genocide, but the complicity that perpetuates it. Told through a visually timeless figurative stylization recalling traditional masters like John Severin and Joe Kubert, the loudest thing in Gaza is not the bombs, but the roar of silence from the international community —their stubborn, deathly denial.
